What is a Locum Structural Heart Interventional Cardiologist?

A Locum Structural Heart Interventional Cardiologist is a specialized physician who temporarily fills in at hospitals or clinics to diagnose and treat diseases and defects related to the heart's structure, such as valve disorders and congenital heart defects. 'Locum' refers to their temporary status, often covering for permanent staff on leave or during staffing shortages. These cardiologists perform minimally invasive procedures, like transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and mitral valve repair, to improve patient outcomes. They are highly trained in both interventional cardiology and the management of structural heart conditions. Their expertise ensures continuity of advanced cardiac care during transitional periods.

To thrive as a Locum Structural Heart Interventional Cardiologist, you need board certification in cardiology, advanced fellowship training in interventional cardiology, and specialized expertise in structural heart procedures such as TAVR and MitraClip. Proficiency with advanced imaging modalities, catheterization lab equipment, and familiarity with EMR systems is essential, while credentials such as ACLS certification are typically required. Outstanding decision-making ability, adaptability, and communication skills are critical for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and providing high-quality patient care in varied clinical settings. Job description

Interventional/Structural Cardiologist

Independence Health System is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible Interventional Cardiologist, with or without formal Structural Cardiology training, to join a well-established, collaborative, and multidisciplinary cardiovascular team at Westmoreland Hospital. This position offers a balanced mix of inpatient and outpatient clinical responsibilities within a high-volume, expanding cardiovascular service line. The schedule is designed to support sustainable work-life balance through shared call coverage and a highly collaborative team model.

The physician will practice in a state-of-the-art four-laboratory heart center, with expansion to five laboratories planned in 2026, including two hybrid operating rooms. The catheterization laboratories support a comprehensive range of interventional, structural, electrophysiology, and vascular procedures and are shared among a highly integrated team of cardiovascular specialists. Westmoreland Hospital has been recognized by Healthgrades as the #1 Cath Lab in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the past three consecutive years. The program is Primary Heart Attack–certified by The Joint Commission.

Both new graduates and experienced Interventional Cardiologists are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong expertise in coronary interventions and a solid foundation in non-invasive cardiovascular diagnostics, including echocardiography, stress testing, ambulatory cardiac monitoring, and nuclear cardiology. Experience or interest in structural heart interventions—including TAVR, MitraClip, TriClip, and other advanced structural procedures—is welcomed, with mentorship and programmatic support available. The physician will practice guideline-directed, evidence-based cardiovascular care consistent with ACC/AHA standards.

This role includes active participation in multidisciplinary cardiovascular and structural heart clinics, quality improvement initiatives, and shared call coverage. The cardiologist will work closely with interventional and structural cardiologists, electrophysiologists, cardiac and vascular surgeons, and a highly skilled team of advanced practice providers.

The selected physician will share STEMI and weekend call responsibilities with partners and will be supported by a collegial, physician-led environment that emphasizes clinical excellence, patient-centered care, and opportunities for professional growth and leadership within the cardiovascular service line.
