To thrive as a Locum RN, you need a valid nursing license (such as an RN), strong clinical skills, and the ability to quickly adapt to new healthcare environments. Experience with various electronic health record (EHR) systems and up-to-date certifications like BLS or ACLS are typically required. Excellent communication, flexibility, and resilience stand out as vital soft skills for effectively integrating into different teams and delivering consistent care. These competencies ensure high-quality patient outcomes and seamless transitions within temporary assignments.

What are some common challenges faced by locum RNs, and how can they be addressed?

Locum RNs often work in new environments with varying protocols and teams, which can be challenging when quickly adapting to different workplace cultures and patient care systems. Building strong communication skills and remaining flexible are essential to ensure smooth transitions and effective collaboration with permanent staff. Proactively seeking orientation, clarifying expectations with supervisors, and leveraging previous experience can help overcome these challenges and ensure high-quality patient care. Many locum agencies also offer support resources to help nurses acclimate quickly to new assignments.
