Job description

Dock Master

The primary role of the Dock Master at The Charleston Place is to maintain a clean, organized, secure, and fully operational hotel loading dock to support daily operations. This position is responsible for receiving shipments as needed, coordinating deliveries, and assisting with group load-in and load-out activities.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain the loading dock in a clean, clear, painted, and fully operational condition, including power washing and managing odor and pest control.
  • Ensure all dock equipment remains clean, safe, and operational.
  • Receive shipments for Purchasing and other departments as needed.
  • Assist with group load-in and load-out activities.
  • Serve as the hotel's on-site authority for managing deliveries, delivery vehicles, contractors, and scheduling use of delivery bays and the loading zone on Hasel Street.
  • Oversee trash removal operations, including management of the compactor and cardboard bales.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and functionality of the freight elevator and report any malfunctions promptly.
  • Keep the transfer switch room clean and organized, and ensure the storage cage remains locked at all times.
  • Maintain company vans and trucks, including monitoring registration, insurance, fuel levels, tire pressure, and fluid levels. Coordinate maintenance and mechanic visits as needed and track vehicle usage.
  • Make runs to the off-site warehouse as needed and time permits.
  • Adhere to all safety, security, and emergency procedures. Respond appropriately during emergencies and correct hazards promptly.
  • Follow security protocols regarding guest room and master keys, boiler and electrical rooms, engineering areas, and proper chemical storage.
  • Keep the Chief Engineer or Assistant Director of Engineering fully informed of significant issues or unusual matters requiring attention.
Required Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools.
  • Ability to operate a pallet jack and a portable manual forklift.
  • Ability to operate a power washer.
  • Basic painting skills.
  • Basic vehicle maintenance knowledge (checking tire pressure, fluids, etc.).
  • Ability to utilize a work order management system with detailed notes and status updates.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with departments such as Housekeeping and Stewarding.
  • Ability to handle confrontational situations calmly and professionally.
  • Flexibility in scheduling, including peak hotel periods.
  • Willingness to learn and demonstrate initiative for professional growth.
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of maintenance experience preferred.
Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift equipment and supplies weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, particularly during peak hotel hours or events.
  • Frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • Regular use of hands to handle, reach, and operate tools and equipment.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Clear vision for reading labels, instructions, blueprints, and reports.
  • Adequate hearing for effective communication via radios and direct interaction with colleagues and guests.
