Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:
Leadership development opportunity in a residential camp setting that provides a quality experience to campers and participants focused on the YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
Overnight Camp Cabin Counselors live on-site in the cabin with campers and co-counselors. Cabin Counselors supervise campers, teach skills, and facilitate activities in a way that gives campers a great experience in the program. Counselors will be assigned daily activities that may include Target Sports, Field Sports, Court Sports, Climbing Wall/Tower, Paddle Sports, Fishing, Lifeguarding (pool and lake), and/or Day Camp program. Camp activities are assigned based on skill and certifications.
Summer 2026 Dates:
Staff Training Week 5/31-6/6/2026 (required)
Kanata Overnight Camps run from 6/7-8/8/2026 (Sunday-Saturday) andDay Camps run simultaneously (Monday-Friday).


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Attend Staff Training to clearly understand and learn the functions of the job
  • Provide an environment of physical, mental, and spiritual safety for all campers and participants
  • Reside in overnight cabins to ensure camper privacy, safety, and security, and to serve as role model for the campers in your assigned cabin
  • Understand daily schedule and/or cabin routine
  • Mentor and model responsible behavior
  • Enhance teamwork and character among campers and participants
  • Organize and supervise group activities as needed
  • Teach skills or supervise/facilitate on assigned activity?(Aquatics, Archery, Basketball, Climbing Wall, Creative Arts, Environmental Discovery, Golf, Lacrosse, Paddle Sports, Riflery, Soccer) as certification level permits
  • Assist campers and participants with goal setting and celebrate accomplishments
  • Plan and deliver nightly devotions and "goodnights" as needed
  • Maintain camper's and participant's health and well being
  • Oversight of cleaning and sanitation responsibilities within specific program and/or cabin areas to protect health and safety of camping community

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Requires a positive attitude, high level of professionalism and enjoy working in and creating a strong team environment.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Multi-lingual desired but not required.
  • Minimum 16 years of age at time of application. CILT (Camper in Leadership Training) and/or CIT (Counselor in Training) experience preferred. 1-2 years' experience working with children
  • Priority will be given to applicants who are available to work the entire summer
  • Make safety and privacy a camp priority and pay attention to details
  • Exhibit strong communication skills
  • Be dependable, consistent, and able to work in a group setting with different types of people
  • Make decisions and be confident in your abilities
  • Have a genuine interest in children and be able to care for them
  • Have a general knowledge and passion for camp, be a creative thinker, be a positive influence and teacher for campers and participants
  • Sex at birth must match the sex of camp cabin occupants
