Job description

Functions:

The Assistant Teacher, under the supervision of the Coordinator of Childcare, will counsel, aid and teach children in need of educational direction.  The Assistant Child Care Teacher is responsible for assisting the child care teacher in the classroom.  The assistant teacher will have direct hands-on experience in working with children, ages 2 months to 6 years.

Reports To:   Coordinator of Child Care & Recreation

Principal Activities:

  • Working with the guidelines of Serenity House Family Residence, the Assistant Teacher carries out the functions of Serenity House Family Residence, policies and procedures; observing the schedules in the center and adhering to its established personnel policies and practices.

  • Assist in the supervision of a given group of children.

  • Assist in the planning and execution of a program to provide childcare for children which takes into account the educational, social, developmental, and health needs of the group as well as the individual child.

  • Share responsibility for keeping equipment and material accessible and in good clean condition in order to encourage maximum, constructive use by the children.

  • Removing and/or reporting any damaged or hazardous equipment to the Supervisor so the appropriate action may be taken.

  • Responsible for planning and supervising an appropriate arrangement of classroom equipment and furniture designed to promote optimal program functioning.

  • Shares in the overall planning for the best use of shared space relative to the size of the program.

  • Plans the use of community resources to enrich the educational content of the children’s program.

  • Develops a program of sound educational goals, appropriate to the age and developmental level of the children which will enable them to make the most of their future educational opportunities.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH:

  • Shares with classroom associates, their mutual knowledge and understanding of the community.

  • Participates in regularly scheduled individual conferences, classroom group conferences and staff meetings.

  • Shares with other classroom personnel, the performance of routine chores related to all areas of the program.

  • He/she attends all mandatory training in the field of early childhood education.

DEVELOPS AND MAINTAINS A POSITIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH PARENTS:

  • Adheres to the approved plan by which information concerning the child(ren) and program is shared with the parent.

  • Attends and participates in group parent meetings—as necessary.

  • Respects the confidential nature of all information about parent and children.

KITCHEN AND PREPARATION OF FOOD :

  • Prepares nutritious breakfast, lunch & snacks in accordance to USDA guidelines.

  • Follows recipes menu and portion controls.

  • Ensures that food is prepared in a sanitary and timely manner.

  • Cleaning, sanitizing and the organization of food products and utensils in the kitchen on a routine basis, (i.e. Refrigerator, Freezer, Shelves, Dishes).

Maintains good work relationships and objectivity with other staff members of the childcare center and Serenity House Family Residence.

Effect on End Results:

  • Compliance with contractual obligations and ensures that Serenity House Family Residence’s regulations are maintained.

  • Services are delivered to children in an effective and humane manner.

  • Services are delivered to children so that their parents can pursue important activities (i.e. educational/training programs, search for permanent housing, search for employment, attend day programs.)

The agency is recognized by the public, advocacy groups, other social service agencies and by the residents as a provider of quality services, thereby maintaining a positive image.

Qualifications:

The incumbent must have at least a High School Diploma and 2 years experience or have an Associate Child Development Credential approved by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and one (1) year of classroom teaching experience, Food Safety Certification. Preference is given to applicants with teaching experience, preferably in a social service setting.

Compensation and Benefits 

Base salary range and benefits information for this position are being included in accordance with requirements of New York State and City pay transparency laws.  Please note that salaries may vary for different individuals in the same role based on several factors, including but not limited to location of the role, individuals’ competencies, education/professional certifications, qualifications/experience and performance in the role.   

Compensation 

The base salary compensation range being offered for this role is $38,620.40 per year.
