What is a Live In Multisystemic Therapist?

A Live In Multisystemic Therapist is a mental health professional who provides intensive, in-home therapy for youth and families experiencing severe behavioral or emotional challenges. They apply the Multisystemic Therapy (MST) model, which addresses issues across a young person’s family, peer, school, and community environments. By living with the family or being available on-site, the therapist can offer immediate support, model positive behaviors, and implement interventions directly in the home setting. Job description

Overview

Join Catholic Charities of Buffalo as a Clinician to empower youth and families by creating strength-based behavior change that will be sustained long after treatment ends. The Clinician will receive ongoing team support, training, and supervision in the Multisystemic Therapy (MST) model as they work holistically with families, youth, their communities, and other key members of their ecology to implement MST. Extensive research has proven the effectiveness of MST. MST therapists work in close collaboration with all involved to address the needs of youth who engage in problematic and criminal behaviors, and, in some cases, substance abuse. The Clinician will empower families to address problematic behaviors and to help their youth ages 11 - 17 make life-transforming changes. Treatment progress is made through intensive interventions such as changing unhelpful family interactions, addressing the youth's problems with peers and in school, and increasing social support, to name a few.

Catholic Charities is non-profit human services agency that strives to empower individuals, children, and families across the eight counties of Western New York. For more than 100 years, Catholic Charities of Buffalo has provided HOPE to individuals and families of all faiths, backgrounds, and circumstances.

As the most comprehensive provider of human services in Western New York, Catholic Charities delivers wide-ranging programs to address systemic poverty, sudden financial crisis, hunger, behavioral health, workforce readiness, family stability, legal immigration and resettlement, and help for older adults. As a trauma-informed agency, we strive to support the total wellbeing of clients and employees.

Catholic Charities prioritizes wellness and diversity through various committees such as: CARE (Compassion, Acceptance, Respect for Everyone) Committee to create an inclusive environment where every individual feels seen, heard, and valued; Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) Committee to lead agency efforts in creating and maintaining a trauma-informed workplace; Wellbeing Committee to empower staff to reach their full potential through personal wellness and community support; and the Safety Committee to maintain a physically and psychologically safe and welcoming environment for all.

Job Responsibilities

  • Engage in weekly case planning and evaluation of case progress, with ongoing support from your supervisor and team members, including through group supervision.

  • While only one therapist works with a particular family, the MST team facilitates a supportive work environment to cover each other's clients for vacation/time off and support each other in maintaining a work/life balance.

  • Receive regular training, professional development, supervision, and consultation activities designed to help you acquire extensive clinical skills within the MST treatment model.

  • Provide clinical treatment to families using the MST treatment model and principles. Some principles include leveraging strengths and focusing on the positive, understanding sequences of behavior, and increasing mature behavior.

  • Conduct a thorough assessment of the client and family: gather information on behaviors of concern and strengths in the family and their ecology to inform conceptualization of the problem behaviors and interactions within the family's ecological context.

  • Work comfortably with a diverse community of clients

  • Learn how to effectively connect with the families in the communities served by the team

  • Continuously work to engage the primary caregiver, family members, supports, and community agency staff (school, probation, child welfare) in change-oriented treatment.

  • Promote agency vision, direction and integrity and assist with agency efforts to identify, explore, and develop opportunities to enhance, market, and expand existing services and programs throughout WNY.

  • Exemplify Catholic Charities' mission, vision, guiding principles and values. Cultivate a culture of equity and inclusion.

  • Communicate, comply with, promote, and monitor the integrity and ethical performance, consistent with Catholic Charities' Corporate Compliance, Code of Ethics, HIPAA, legal mandates & labor laws, managing contractual/funder regulations & accreditation standards, regulations, policies, and procedures (e.g. COA, BBB)

  • Knowledge and experience utilizing techniques from evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral, family systems, solution-focused, and motivational interviewing.

  • Ability to implement interventions within or between systems in a youth's natural ecology (e.g., family, peer, school, neighborhood).

  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to build partnerships with community agencies.

  • Must be prepared to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings or weekends for agency-related activities and events.

  • Reliable transportation required to travel within the eight-county WNY region; this position specifically serves families in Niagara County.
