Job description

Position Summary

The Health & Safety Manager serves as a trusted advisor to site leadership and is accountable for developing, implementing, and continuously improving health and safety programs, systems, and standards. The position ensures compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and site safety policies while promoting a culture centered on Zero Harm principles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and oversight of all health and safety activities across site operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory and company standards.
  • Manage team performance by aligning individual goals with organizational objectives, delivering regular performance feedback, and supporting employee development through training and career progression opportunities.
  • Champion a culture of safety excellence through coaching, mentoring, and visible leadership across all levels of the organization.
  • Partner with site leadership to proactively identify risks and implement effective mitigation strategies.
  • Lead and support internal inspections, audits, and risk assessments while ensuring timely corrective actions.
  • Oversee daily health and safety operations, including:
  • Emergency response and medical services
  • Industrial hygiene and occupational health programs
  • Safety training, compliance, and assurance systems
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives and foster a proactive, data-driven safety culture.
  • Provide strategic guidance, coaching, and technical expertise to the H&S team and site leadership.
  • Lead, develop, and manage the H&S team, including performance management and professional development.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of safety data to meet internal and regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies including MSHA and OSHA.
  • Analyze safety trends and metrics to support long-term risk reduction strategies.
  • Lead and support incident investigations, including root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Maintain and enhance site health and safety management systems and standards.
  • Collaborate with operations and regulatory representatives during inspections and audits.
  • Engage with contractors and consultants to ensure alignment with site safety expectations and risk management practices.
  • Support emergency preparedness planning and response readiness activities.
  • Participate in corporate and site-wide health and safety initiatives, audits, governance programs, and knowledge-sharing efforts.

Qualifications Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • 7–10+ years of progressive health and safety experience in mining, manufacturing, or heavy industry environments.
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Underground mining experience strongly preferred.
  • MSHA Instructor certification (surface and underground) preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of MSHA, OSHA, and applicable state regulations.
  • Experience in risk management, process safety, and incident investigation.
  • Professional certifications such as CSP, CIH, or CMSP are considered a plus.
  • Ability to work in an underground mining environment.
