What is a litigation associate?

A Litigation Associate is a junior attorney who works at a law firm or legal department, primarily handling cases that involve disputes between parties. They assist with tasks such as legal research, drafting pleadings and motions, managing discovery, and representing clients in court under the supervision of more senior attorneys. Litigation Associates often work on a variety of cases, including civil, commercial, and sometimes criminal matters, and are responsible for keeping cases on track and supporting clients throughout the litigation process.

What are some typical challenges litigation associates face when managing multiple cases simultaneously?

Litigation Associates often juggle several cases at once, which requires strong organizational and time management skills. Balancing competing deadlines for court filings, discovery, and client communications can be challenging, especially during peak litigation periods. Associates must also coordinate with partners, paralegals, and opposing counsel, making effective communication crucial. Developing systems to prioritize tasks and manage workload efficiently is key to success in this fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a litigation associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Litigation Associate, you need strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills, typically supported by a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and bar admission. Familiarity with legal research databases such as Westlaw or LexisNexis and proficiency in case management software are essential. Exceptional communication, attention to detail, and the ability to manage time effectively distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for building persuasive cases, meeting tight deadlines, and achieving successful outcomes for clients in a competitive legal environment.

Job description

Litigation Associate Attorney

A confidential Arizona law firm is seeking a Litigation Associate Attorney to join its real estate, community association, and civil litigation practice. This position offers substantive case responsibility, direct client communication, and the opportunity to handle litigation matters from inception through resolution.

The role is focused on civil litigation, real estate litigation, community association law, HOA and condominium disputes, landlord-tenant litigation, assessment collection, covenant enforcement, and dispute resolution.

Position Overview

The attorney will manage litigation matters involving property-related and civil disputes. Responsibilities include drafting pleadings, motions, discovery, correspondence, settlement materials, and related filings. The attorney will also conduct legal research, prepare practical legal analysis, develop litigation strategy with partners and clients, manage written discovery and document review, and participate in depositions, hearings, conferences, mediations, and court appearances as appropriate.

Trial experience is not required. The firm is focused on candidates with strong pretrial litigation experience, including motion practice, discovery, depositions, hearings, and case strategy.

Candidate Profile

The strongest target profile is a Litigation Associate Attorney with approximately 3 to 5 years of litigation experience. More senior attorneys may also be considered, particularly where they bring relevant real estate, civil litigation, community association, or business-development value.

Qualifications

  • Civil litigation experience required
  • Real estate litigation, community association law, HOA law, condominium law, landlord-tenant, or property-related litigation experience preferred
  • Active Arizona Bar license strongly preferred
  • Candidates licensed in another jurisdiction may be considered if they can obtain Arizona admission
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Experience drafting pleadings, motions, discovery, and settlement-related documents
  • Deposition, motion practice, discovery, and pretrial litigation experience preferred
  • Strong client communication skills
  • Professional, organized, practical, and collaborative approach

The annual billable expectation is approximately 1,400 hours. Occasional HOA or community association-related meetings may be required.

Benefits include health insurance, a 401(k) with up to a 4% employer match, and anticipated dental and vision benefits following the firm's eligibility waiting period.
