What is a litigation associate?

A Litigation Associate is a junior attorney who works at a law firm or legal department, primarily handling cases that involve disputes between parties. They assist with tasks such as legal research, drafting pleadings and motions, managing discovery, and representing clients in court under the supervision of more senior attorneys. Litigation Associates often work on a variety of cases, including civil, commercial, and sometimes criminal matters, and are responsible for keeping cases on track and supporting clients throughout the litigation process.

What are some typical challenges litigation associates face when managing multiple cases simultaneously?

Litigation Associates often juggle several cases at once, which requires strong organizational and time management skills. Balancing competing deadlines for court filings, discovery, and client communications can be challenging, especially during peak litigation periods. Associates must also coordinate with partners, paralegals, and opposing counsel, making effective communication crucial. Developing systems to prioritize tasks and manage workload efficiently is key to success in this fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a litigation associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Litigation Associate, you need strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills, typically supported by a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and bar admission. Familiarity with legal research databases such as Westlaw or LexisNexis and proficiency in case management software are essential. Exceptional communication, attention to detail, and the ability to manage time effectively distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for building persuasive cases, meeting tight deadlines, and achieving successful outcomes for clients in a competitive legal environment.

Job Description - Litigation Associate Attorney

Litigation Associate Attorney (3–5 Years)

Dallas, Texas

Our client has an opening for a Litigation Associate Attorney for their highly respected boutique law firm in Dallas. This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney seeking meaningful courtroom experience, direct mentorship from experienced trial lawyers, and a long-term career with a collaborative litigation practice.

This firm represents businesses, commercial property owners, developers, investors, and other organizations in a broad range of complex commercial and civil litigation matters. Associates work closely with partners from the outset, receive substantial client interaction, and are encouraged to take ownership of their cases.

Responsibilities

Manage a diverse commercial litigation caseload from inception through resolution

Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery requests and responses, and other litigation documents

Conduct legal research and develop case strategy

Participate in depositions, mediations, hearings, and trial preparation

Work directly with clients, opposing counsel, experts, and the courts

Assist with and, when appropriate, take an active role in bench and jury trials

Collaborate with senior attorneys while progressively assuming greater responsibility for client matters

Develop trusted relationships with clients through practical, business-focused legal counsel

Qualifications

Juris Doctor from an accredited law school

Active license to practice law in Texas

Approximately 3–5 years of commercial litigation experience

Experience handling business disputes, contract litigation, commercial real estate litigation, construction litigation, or other complex civil litigation matters

Experience preparing for trial and participating in hearings, depositions, mediations, or trial proceedings

Excellent legal research, writing, analytical, and advocacy skills

Strong organizational abilities with experience managing multiple litigation matters simultaneously

Desire to continue developing as a trial attorney within a collaborative environment

What Makes This Opportunity Different

This is not a document-review or back-office litigation role. The firm provides associates with meaningful responsibility, direct access to experienced litigators and shareholders, and the opportunity to develop courtroom and client-management skills early in their careers.

The partners are committed to mentoring attorneys who want to build long-term litigation practices and become trusted advisors to their clients.

Compensation & Benefits

Competitive base salary commensurate with experience

Performance-based bonus opportunities

Additional incentive compensation for originating new client relationships

Reasonable billable expectation of approximately 150 billable hours per month

Comprehensive benefits package including 401k employer contributions

Collaborative, team-oriented culture with strong mentorship and professional development
