What is a litigation associate?

A Litigation Associate is a junior attorney who works at a law firm or legal department, primarily handling cases that involve disputes between parties. They assist with tasks such as legal research, drafting pleadings and motions, managing discovery, and representing clients in court under the supervision of more senior attorneys. Litigation Associates often work on a variety of cases, including civil, commercial, and sometimes criminal matters, and are responsible for keeping cases on track and supporting clients throughout the litigation process.

What are some typical challenges litigation associates face when managing multiple cases simultaneously?

Litigation Associates often juggle several cases at once, which requires strong organizational and time management skills. Balancing competing deadlines for court filings, discovery, and client communications can be challenging, especially during peak litigation periods. Associates must also coordinate with partners, paralegals, and opposing counsel, making effective communication crucial. Developing systems to prioritize tasks and manage workload efficiently is key to success in this fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a litigation associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Litigation Associate, you need strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills, typically supported by a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and bar admission. Familiarity with legal research databases such as Westlaw or LexisNexis and proficiency in case management software are essential. Exceptional communication, attention to detail, and the ability to manage time effectively distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for building persuasive cases, meeting tight deadlines, and achieving successful outcomes for clients in a competitive legal environment.

Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE

A sophisticated New York litigation practice is seeking a mid-level associate who wants to move beyond the traditional large-firm model without sacrificing the quality of the work. The practice handles complex commercial disputes involving contracts, partnerships and shareholders, fraud, financial matters, and other high-stakes business conflicts in state and federal courts. Associates are expected to become substantive litigators, with meaningful responsibility for cases, direct partner and client exposure, and opportunities to take depositions, argue motions, and develop the judgment required to eventually run matters themselves.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Handle complex commercial disputes through multiple stages of litigation in New York state and federal courts
  • Draft pleadings, briefs, dispositive motions, discovery motions, and other substantive litigation filings
  • Take and defend depositions and participate directly in hearings, conferences, arguments, and trial preparation
  • Manage discovery, factual investigations, case strategy, and day-to-day responsibility for assigned matters
  • Communicate directly with clients and work closely with experienced commercial litigators on strategy
  • Develop increasing ownership of matters as your experience and capabilities grow

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to the New York Bar
  • 3–6 years of substantive commercial litigation experience
  • Experience handling complex business disputes at a law firm
  • Strong legal research, analytical, brief-writing, and advocacy skills
  • Deposition, court appearance, oral argument, or significant case-management experience preferred
  • Ability to take ownership of sophisticated matters while working effectively with partners and clients

WHAT WE OFFER

A strong alternative for commercial litigators who want sophisticated New York litigation without spending the next several years confined to narrow pieces of larger cases. The opportunity combines competitive compensation and hybrid flexibility with earlier responsibility, direct client exposure, substantive advocacy experience, and a platform where strong associates can develop into genuinely well-rounded commercial litigators.
