What is a litigation associate?

A Litigation Associate is a junior attorney who works at a law firm or legal department, primarily handling cases that involve disputes between parties. They assist with tasks such as legal research, drafting pleadings and motions, managing discovery, and representing clients in court under the supervision of more senior attorneys. Litigation Associates often work on a variety of cases, including civil, commercial, and sometimes criminal matters, and are responsible for keeping cases on track and supporting clients throughout the litigation process.

What are some typical challenges litigation associates face when managing multiple cases simultaneously?

Litigation Associates often juggle several cases at once, which requires strong organizational and time management skills. Balancing competing deadlines for court filings, discovery, and client communications can be challenging, especially during peak litigation periods. Associates must also coordinate with partners, paralegals, and opposing counsel, making effective communication crucial. Developing systems to prioritize tasks and manage workload efficiently is key to success in this fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a litigation associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Litigation Associate, you need strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills, typically supported by a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and bar admission. Familiarity with legal research databases such as Westlaw or LexisNexis and proficiency in case management software are essential. Exceptional communication, attention to detail, and the ability to manage time effectively distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for building persuasive cases, meeting tight deadlines, and achieving successful outcomes for clients in a competitive legal environment.

Job description

About the Firm & This Opportunity
At Edwards Injury Law, we are a growing plaintiff personal injury firm focused on high-quality cases, strong litigation strategy, and meaningful outcomes for our clients.
We are intentional about our growth. This hire is not about adding volume. It is about increasing capacity, elevating our litigation function, and building toward the next stage of the firm.
We are hiring our third attorney to expand our litigation capacity and reduce the day-to-day burden on our lead attorney.
Over the next 12 months, we expect to increase case volume, improve case quality, and build a more independent litigation function. Most cases will not flow through the lead attorney. This role is key to making that possible.
Role Responsibilities & Litigation Expectations
You will step directly into the daily demands of litigation and are expected to contribute as a litigator.
Responsibilities include:
  • Discovery (drafting and responding)
  • Motion practice
  • Hearings and court appearances
  • Depositions
  • Case development and preparation

Case Ownership & Structure:
  • Begin by working alongside the lead attorney on active cases
  • Transition into managing your own litigation caseload
  • Handle a mix of high-value litigation cases and select pre-suit matters
  • Contribute to and eventually lead case strategy

Litigation Profile:
While trial experience is preferred, it is not required. Strong litigation fundamentals are essential. Candidates should be able to demonstrate experience with depositions, substantive motion practice, hearings, and proactively advancing litigation.
Professional Approach & Growth Path
We are building a team of attorneys who take ownership of their work and grow into leadership over time.
How You Work:
  • Strong attention to detail and high-quality work product
  • Clear, professional communication
  • Ownership of decisions and outcomes
  • Ability to think critically and engage in strategy

Growth & Development:
  • Independent caseload management
  • Mentorship opportunities
  • Contribution to firm-wide litigation strategy
  • Path toward senior leadership or managing attorney

Business Development (Future-Focused):
  • Build relationships within the legal community
  • Participate in bar associations and professional organizations
  • Develop referral sources over time

Required Qualifications
  • Active license to practice law in North Carolina and in good standing
  • 3+ years of litigation experience (personal injury preferred, but not required)
  • Demonstrated experience handling core litigation tasks, including depositions, motion practice, and court appearances
  • Strong legal writing and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Candidates must be able to demonstrate ownership of their work product and decision-making in prior roles.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in plaintiff personal injury litigation
  • Experience managing cases with increasing levels of responsibility
  • Familiarity with discovery strategy and case development
  • Interest in growing into a leadership or senior role over time

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive base salary (full compensation structure will be discussed during the interview process)
  • Performance-based compensation structure tied to production and growth
  • Health insurance options
  • 401(k) benefits
  • Paid time off and firm holidays
  • Opportunity for increased earnings as case responsibility and results grow
