Why is Gen Z struggling to get jobs?

Gen Z faces challenges in securing jobs due to high competition, limited work experience, and evolving skill requirements such as proficiency with digital tools and certifications. For roles like lithography technicians, employers often seek specialized training and hands-on experience, which can be harder for younger applicants to demonstrate.

What is a Lithography job?

A Lithography job involves working with photolithography processes used in semiconductor manufacturing to pattern and transfer circuit designs onto silicon wafers. This role includes operating lithography equipment, troubleshooting process issues, and ensuring precise alignment and resolution of patterns. Lithography engineers or technicians collaborate with other semiconductor professionals to optimize process performance and improve yield. They often work in cleanroom environments and use advanced optical or EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography technologies to create smaller, more efficient chips.

What jobs make around $100,000 a year?

In the field of lithography, senior roles such as lithography engineers, process engineers, or technical managers often earn around $100,000 annually, especially with experience and specialized skills in equipment operation, process optimization, and quality control. These positions typically require advanced technical knowledge, certifications, and sometimes a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering or related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Lithography position, and why are they important?

To thrive in lithography, you need strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and a solid understanding of printing processes, typically supported by technical training or experience in manufacturing or print production. Familiarity with lithography equipment, process control tools, and safety procedures is essential, and certifications in print technology can be advantageous. Good problem-solving, time management, and teamwork are important soft skills for this role. These strengths ensure high-quality output, efficient operation, and safe handling of sophisticated machinery in a fast-paced printing environment.

How much do lithography engineers make?

Lithography engineers typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $70,000 to $120,000, depending on experience, education, and location. Advanced skills in photolithography processes, equipment operation, and cleanroom environments can lead to higher compensation, especially in semiconductor manufacturing companies.

What does a lithography engineer do?

A lithography engineer designs, develops, and optimizes photolithography processes used in semiconductor manufacturing to create integrated circuits. They work with equipment such as steppers and scanners, analyze patterning results, and ensure precision at nanometer scales. Strong knowledge of optics, materials, and process control is essential for this role.

What are some typical daily responsibilities for someone working in lithography?

Daily responsibilities for a lithography professional typically include setting up and maintaining printing presses, preparing plates and materials, monitoring print runs for quality control, and troubleshooting any process issues. You may also be responsible for routine equipment maintenance, adjusting ink levels, and ensuring adherence to safety and production standards. Collaboration often occurs with prepress technicians, quality assurance teams, and supervisors to ensure that projects meet deadlines and client specifications. This role is hands-on and detail-oriented, making strong organizational skills valuable for success.

Job description

About Xanadu
Xanadu's mission is to build quantum computers that are useful and available to people everywhere. At Xanadu, we are learners, innovators, researchers, collaborators and problem solvers. We are creating something that has never been built before. What we are doing is extremely hard, the classic moon shot. Few people in their life will be able to be a part of something like this, where if we are successful, the technologies we develop will solve some of the world's most challenging problems, and literally change the world. And that is something to be excited about!
Your role and responsibilities:
As an industry leader in photonic quantum computing, Xanadu takes hardware very seriously! In this role, you will work within the Fabrication Process Engineering team to deliver Xanadu's photonic quantum computing hardware. With your deep technical expertise and strong experience in photonics fabrication process development and process integration, you will be responsible for developing process integration schemes used to build critical components of Xanadu's quantum computing hardware.
Process Integration & Quantum Hardware Development:
  • Coordinate between several internal component teams to ensure all hardware requirements are satisfied in delivered chips and circuits.
  • Innovate in the space of photonic process development and process integration, especially with respect to ultra-low loss components.
  • Collaborate with internal and external photonics process engineers to refine fabrication procedures for ultra-low loss photonic quantum computing chips.
  • Work with Xanadu's foundry partners to continuously improve lithography approach while balancing competing fabrication requirements.
  • Deliver integrated quantum photonics chips and circuits containing multiple active and passive components.

Lithography & Tapeout Ownership:
  • Build, define, and own the entire photolithography and tapeout module from layout receipt to final wafer patterning.
  • Receive GDS design files and manage the tapeout cycle with external mask shops.
  • Define the exact specifications for OPC aggressiveness, dummy fill density rules, and Optical Rules Check (ORC) targets.
  • Develop and enforce the Lithography Design Rule Manual and provide critical Design for Manufacturing (DFM) feedback to layout teams.
  • Define scanner illumination conditions and tune Numerical Aperture/Sigma settings to maximize process windows.
  • Execute rigorous focus/exposure matrices, optimize photoresist/BARC chemistries, and establish metrology baselines to ensure strict CD and overlay control.
  • Stay abreast of new developments in the fields of photonics fabrication process development and advanced patterning.

Basic qualifications and experience:
  • MS, or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years experience in a foundry environment for semiconductor and/or integrated photonics products, including experience owning lots, working with an MES, etc.
  • Familiarity with standard semiconductor and photonics metrology and failure analysis techniques, including some subset of: SEM, TEM, AFM, defect inspection, ellipsometry, XRR/XRD, SIMS, Raman spectroscopy.
  • Familiarity with photonic components, such as waveguides, beamsplitters, resonators, MZIs, etc.
