Commercial paper is a short-term, unsecured promissory note issued by corporations to raise funds for immediate financial needs such as payroll, inventory, or accounts payable. It typically has a maturity of up to 270 days and is sold at a discount to its face value. Only companies with high credit ratings can issue commercial paper, making it a low-risk investment for buyers. It is commonly used in the money market as an alternative to bank loans.

Professionals in commercial paper issuance and trading are responsible for managing short-term debt instruments issued by corporations to meet immediate funding needs. Their daily tasks often include liaising with corporate clients to assess financing requirements, coordinating with investment banks or dealers for placement, monitoring market conditions, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Collaboration with treasury teams, risk management, and legal departments is common, as is maintaining strong relationships with institutional investors. The role requires attention to detail, an understanding of money markets, and the ability to adapt to fast-paced financial environments.
