How much do liquid handling jobs pay per hour?
What is a liquid handling?
A Liquid Handling job involves the operation, maintenance, and optimization of automated or manual systems used to transfer, dispense, or measure liquids in laboratory settings. Professionals in this role work with pipettes, robotic liquid handlers, and other specialized equipment to ensure accuracy and reproducibility in experiments. These jobs are common in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and research laboratories, where precision in liquid measurement is crucial for scientific outcomes. Responsibilities may also include troubleshooting equipment, calibrating instruments, and following strict protocols to maintain data integrity.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in liquid handling?
To thrive in a Liquid Handling role, you need meticulous attention to detail, strong manual dexterity, and an understanding of laboratory procedures, often supported by a background in biological sciences or laboratory technology. Familiarity with automated liquid handling systems, such as pipetting robots and plate readers, and certifications in laboratory safety are highly beneficial. Strong organizational skills, clear communication, and the ability to work collaboratively help individuals excel in this position. These capabilities ensure high accuracy, efficiency, and safety in critical laboratory workflows involving sample preparation and analysis.
What are some typical challenges encountered in liquid handling?
Common challenges in a Liquid Handling role include maintaining the precision and accuracy of liquid transfers, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and adapting to varied sample types or protocols. The work often demands careful calibration of automated systems and strict adherence to sterile techniques to avoid cross-contamination. You may also be expected to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work closely with scientists or lab managers to meet tight deadlines. These challenges make the role both dynamic and rewarding, especially for professionals who enjoy technical tasks and quality-driven environments.

We are a global specialist engineering company that creates breakthrough solutions. We are curious and like to solve problems, partnering with our customers to solve the demands of today and prepare for the challenges of tomorrow. We embrace innovation and care about outcomes that are good for business, everyday life and making a better world – creating lasting impact for everyone.
We design, build and service highly engineered products in fluid and motion control applications. We focus on five market sectors: Industrial Automation, Process Automation, Climate Control, Life Science, and Transport.
Our partnership approach breaks through problems and reduces complexity. We don’t invent in isolation – we collaborate with our customers. We listen closely and we think differently, creating space for diverse minds to innovate. We are working together to make businesses safer, more sustainable and more productive.
Role Overview:
This is an exciting opportunity to join our Life Science Sector as Product Manager for our Liquid Handling portfolio. You will own market and product strategy, customer discovery, portfolio decisions, technology roadmap alignment, and Growth Hub execution across the full product lifecycle, acting as the voice of the customer and a technical product leader for liquid handling workflows and applications.
Work Environment: This is a hybrid role, with a preference for candidates based in the Northeast USA. Travel is expected up to 25-50% for customer visits, trade shows, distribution partners, and manufacturing sites.
Key Responsibilities:
- Product Strategy and Roadmap: Own and communicate the product roadmap for the liquid handling portfolio, aligning priorities with customer workflow needs, application requirements, product performance, and Life Science growth objectives.
- Voice of the Customer: Engage directly with scientists, automation engineers, laboratory managers, and OEM customers to capture customer opportunities - unmet needs, pain points, and desires - across diagnostic, analytical, and biotechnology workflows.
- Requirements Definition: Translate customer insights, market opportunities, and application needs into clear product requirements that inform roadmap priorities, customer value, and NPI decisions, while partnering with site engineering teams that lead technical requirements definition and execution of the technology roadmap.
- New Product Introduction: Partner with R&D, engineering, operations, quality, applications, commercial teams, and finance to advance NPI by validating customer opportunities, building business cases, and ensuring technical execution remains aligned to customer value, portfolio priorities, and commercial objectives.
- Application Support: Provide technical and application support to customers and internal teams on liquid handling workflows, helping connect product capabilities to real diagnostic, analytical, and biotechnology use cases.
- Competitive and Technology Analysis: Monitor advances in liquid handling technologies, workflow trends, competitor product performance, and application requirements to inform positioning and differentiation.
- Lifecycle and Portfolio Management: Manage the full product lifecycle - pricing, margin, obsolescence, and rationalization - across the liquid handling portfolio.
- Commercial Enablement: Develop technical collateral, application notes, and datasheets, and train sales and distribution partners on the workflows and applications behind the portfolio.
Critical Competencies for Success
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Life Sciences, Chemistry, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or a related technical field; advanced degree preferred.
- Proven product management or product ownership experience in a B2B, industrial, or life science environment
- Experience managing a product line across the full lifecycle
- Strong commercial acumen and understanding of pricing and margin drivers
- Ability to translate end-user workflow needs into clear product requirements and commercially sound roadmap decisions
- Demonstrated end-user, applications, or workflow experience in liquid handling, including how scientists, automation engineers, and laboratory teams use products in real workflows
- Experience leading cross-functional new product introduction (NPI)
- Strong knowledge of liquid handling workflows, applications, and technologies, including precision pumps, valves, fluidic components, automated liquid handling systems, or related laboratory instrumentation
- Strong market analysis and business case development skills
- Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to influence and align cross-functional teams without direct authority
- Data-driven approach to decision-making.
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Customer-focused mindset with strong curiosity about unmet needs, pain points, and application challenges
- Ability to operate as part of a collaborative Growth Hub team while maintaining clear day-to-day ownership of assigned portfolio segments
Pay range: $120,000 - $140,000
Within this range, individual pay is determined based on skills, experience, and qualifications relative to the job requirements. Base pay information is aligned with market location and may be subject to prevailing wage laws, if applicable.
Bonus eligibility: This position is also eligible for a variable incentive pay component, separate from base salary.
