Linux System Administrator Volunteer information

What does a Linux System Administrator Volunteer do?

A Linux System Administrator Volunteer is responsible for managing, maintaining, and troubleshooting Linux-based servers and systems, usually for nonprofit organizations or community projects. Their tasks may include installing software, applying security patches, monitoring system performance, and ensuring data backups. As a volunteer, they often work to improve the reliability and security of IT infrastructure while supporting users and documenting processes. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and helps organizations operate efficiently with limited resources.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Linux System Administrator Volunteer?

To thrive as a Linux System Administrator Volunteer, you need a solid understanding of Linux operating systems, networking concepts, and basic scripting, often backed by hands-on experience or relevant coursework. Familiarity with tools like Bash, SSH, configuration management systems (e.g., Ansible), and optional certifications such as CompTIA Linux+ or LPIC-1 is valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help you resolve issues efficiently and collaborate with team members. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining system stability, security, and reliable IT operations in volunteer-driven environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Linux System Administrator Volunteers, and how can they effectively manage their time and responsibilities?

Linux System Administrator Volunteers often face challenges such as balancing volunteer duties with other commitments, unfamiliarity with existing infrastructure, and adapting to varying documentation standards. To manage these effectively, it's helpful to communicate clearly with the team about task expectations and deadlines, prioritize learning key systems early on, and utilize available documentation and collaboration tools. Staying organized and setting aside regular time each week for volunteer responsibilities can also ensure consistent contribution and skill development.

Position Summary:
Synergy is seeking a Sr. Database Administrator to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG) at the Aviation Logistics Center (ALC)—Information Systems Division (ISD). The Sr. Database Administrator will be responsible for managing the full lifecycle of enterprise databases that support logistics, maintenance, financial, and operational applications. The Sr. DBA will oversee database design, implementation, tuning, security, and compliance while supporting Agile and DevSecOps pipelines in a high-availability, mission-critical environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Administer, configure, and maintain enterprise relational databases including Oracle, Ingres, and Microsoft SQL Server, ensuring performance, availability, and data integrity.
  • Lead the design and implementation of logical and physical database models, including data dictionaries, ERDs, schema designs, and indexing strategies to optimize performance.
  • Perform database performance tuning, query optimization, partitioning, and resource utilization analysis to support high-volume transactions and analytics workloads.
  • Define and enforce database standards, security policies, and operating procedures aligned with DHS 4300A, STIGs, and NIST 800-53 requirements.
  • Implement database security controls, access roles, encryption protocols, and patch management in support of ATO compliance and cybersecurity mandates.
  • Integrate databases with DevSecOps toolchains using Kubernetes, Jira, Bitbucket, and Confluence to support Agile development and version-controlled environments.
  • Lead or contribute to data migration, legacy system transformation, and database refactoring initiatives as part of enterprise modernization.
  • Work closely with developers, business analysts, cybersecurity professionals, and systems engineers to ensure database solutions meet system and mission requirements.
  • Monitor system usage, conduct capacity planning, and ensure continuity of operations with backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Support configuration management and version control of database environments across development, test, staging, and production tiers.
  • Research and recommend emerging data technologies and database solutions, including support for cloud-readiness, NoSQL models, or hybrid architectures where appropriate.
  • Document all configuration changes, policies, procedures, and database architecture diagrams to ensure audit-readiness and knowledge continuity.
  • All other duties as assigned by management.
Skills/Qualifications:
  • Expertise in administering and tuning Oracle, Ingres, and Microsoft SQL Server databases in enterprise or DoD/federal environments.
  • Proficient in writing complex SQL queries, stored procedures, triggers, functions, and views.
  • Strong understanding of relational and non-relational data models, data normalization, and schema optimization.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies, DevSecOps pipelines, CI/CD integration, and version control using Git-based tools (Bitbucket preferred).
  • Proven ability to perform vulnerability remediation based on Tenable or similar scan tools and ensure STIG-compliant configurations.
  • Solid knowledge of data protection techniques, RBAC, encryption at rest/in transit, and role-based access policies.
Education/Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s or Associate's degree in Computer Science, Math, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field. Five (5) years of directly relevant experience may substitute for two (2) years of formal education.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in database administration work, such as Oracle relational database, Ingres relational database, and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of performing security remediation to systems with vulnerabilities based on security scans.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience with Kubernetes, Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket.
  • Experience supporting federal government systems, particularly within DHS or DoD environments, is strongly preferred.
Clearance:
  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Must have or be eligible to obtain a Position of Public Trust or DoD Secret Clearance.
Certification Requirement
  • CompTIA Security+
  • Additional certifications (Network+, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, ITIL Foundation, TOGAF, or other similar certifications) are a plus.
