Job Description:

Data Center Services (DCS) is a shared service organization within Enterprise Information Services (EIS.) The DCS team maintains and operates a state-of-the-art Data Center, providing a highly secure environment with redundant infrastructure for high availability and efficiency. The services we provide include network connectivity (WAN, LAN, and Wireless), server hosting (mainframe, iSeries, AIX, Linux, and Windows), email services, Data Center colocation and data backup services.

The Hybrid Compute Managed Services (HCMS) team within the Hybrid Compute Section of DCS is responsible for building, deploying, and maintaining Windows OS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers and appliances, as well as providing support to customers for the operating systems and SQL database systems in our hosted and DCS-managed cloud environments.

What You'll Do

As the Senior Linux Server Engineer, you will provide expert-level technical support for Data Center Services, focusing on installation, configuration, maintenance, and security of Linux servers. You'll leverage automation tools such as Ansible, Red Hat Satellite, Terraform, and GitHub-based workflows to ensure efficient deployment and lifecycle management. Your work directly impacts the reliability and security of critical IT services supporting more than 150 state agencies, boards, and commissions.

Please be aware: This team is also currently recruiting a Linux Server Engineer ISS7 on REQ-205837. We encourage interested candidates to review and apply for both positions, as applicable to their experience, skills and interest. Interviews for the ISS8 position are tentatively scheduled for the week of September 29. Following that process, we will interview ISS7 candidates the week of October 12.

This Is What You Need to Qualify

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Seven (7) years of information systems experience in: Linux systems-based administration; OR

  • An Associate's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, OR completion of a two (2) year accredited vocational training program in information technology or related field; AND five (5) years of information systems experience in: Linux systems-based administration ; OR

  • A Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field AND three (3) years of information systems experience in: Linux systems-based administration; OR

  • Master's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field AND one (1) year of information systems experience in: Linux systems-based administration

The ideal candidate will possess the following desired skills and attributes:

  • Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining Linux servers and virtual environments, supporting and maintaining a standardized Linux environment and database technologies in an enterprise setting.

  • Experience with Windows and Linux Server Operating Systems and HyperV or VMware.

  • Experience working with cloud platforms such as Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud Platform.

  • Demonstrated skill in Infrastructure-as-Code practices using Ansible, Terraform, and GitHub (peer reviews, branching strategy, GitHub Actions), VS Code or other industry standard code-repository, DevOps and automation tools.

  • Experience with Red Hat Satellite automation, including content views, host groups, activation keys, provisioning templates, and errata automation.

  • Experience with advanced Ansible automation, including roles, collections, dynamic inventory, Satellite integration, and CI/CD-driven playbook workflows.

  • Experience and skill with DevOps and tools, including version control, and CI/CD concepts and tools.

  • Experience and skill with core Ansible and scripting languages such as writing, optimizing, and maintaining playbooks, roles and modules in Ansible.

  • Strong YAML proficiency for Ansible, Satellite templating, and Terraform configurations.

  • Demonstrated skill and ability to collaborate with teammates and build positive business relationships with superiors, subordinates, peers, and others outside of their organization.

  • Proven ability and skill to clearly explain complex/technical concepts in terms that are understandable for technical and non-technical audiences.
