What is linen sales?

Linen sales refer to the process of selling linen products such as bed sheets, towels, tablecloths, napkins, and other textile items made from linen or similar fabrics. Professionals in linen sales are responsible for assisting customers in selecting suitable linen products, providing product information, and ensuring customer satisfaction. They may work in retail stores, wholesale operations, or for companies supplying linens to hotels, restaurants, and hospitals. Their role often involves maintaining inventory, understanding the latest trends in linens, and sometimes negotiating bulk orders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a linen sales professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Linen Sales professional, you need strong product knowledge, customer service skills, and typically a background in retail or sales. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management software, and sometimes basic textile certifications are commonly required. Excellent communication, active listening, and relationship-building skills help you understand client needs and close sales effectively. These abilities ensure customer satisfaction, drive revenue, and promote repeat business in a competitive retail environment.

What are some common challenges faced in a linen sales role, and how can they be addressed?

A common challenge in Linen Sales is staying updated with shifting customer preferences and seasonal trends, as clients often seek both functionality and style in their purchases. Building strong relationships with hospitality and healthcare buyers can also be demanding, as these clients have specific quality and delivery requirements. Successful Linen Sales professionals address these challenges by maintaining product knowledge, proactively communicating with suppliers and clients, and regularly attending industry trade shows to stay ahead of trends. Collaboration with inventory and logistics teams is essential to ensure timely deliveries and meet customer expectations.

Job description

Job Title: Extra Route Sales Representative (RSR) – Warehouse & Relief Driver

Position Type: Full-Time (Non-Exempt) | Approx. 40 hrs/week (Overtime & schedule flexibility required)

Shift: Early Evenings (Warehouse) / Variable Days (Route Relief)

Position Overview

The Extra Route Sales Representative plays a vital dual role in our supply chain and delivery operations. In the early evenings, you will serve as an essential part of our warehouse team, handling the physical loading and unloading of tractor-trailers and maintaining a clean, safe facility. As an "Extra" RSR, you will also train to master our linen service routes, serving as a dependable relief driver to step in and manage route operations, customer relationships, and deliveries whenever and wherever needed.

Key Responsibilities

Warehouse & Freight Operations (Primary)

  • Unload incoming tractor-trailers and load outgoing delivery trucks efficiently in the early evening hours.
  • Stage, organize, and inspect linen products, uniforms, and facility supplies for daily route departures.
  • Perform general custodial and housekeeping duties to ensure a clean, organized, and safe warehouse environment.
  • Operate material handling equipment safely (forklift operation utilized where applicable).

Route Service & Sales Relief (Secondary)

  • Learn and master the operational details of multiple linen delivery routes across the service territory.
  • Fill in for regular Route Sales Representatives during PTO, call-outs, peak periods, or special assignments.
  • Transport linen supplies and commercial products safely to customer locations, adhering to assigned schedules.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service, addressing client inquiries and maintaining strong professional relationships.
  • Accurately manage route paperwork, inventory counts, and daily vehicle check-in/check-out procedures.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • DOT Certification: Must successfully pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam and standard pre-employment drug screening.
  • Physical Capability: Ability to handle consistent physical labor, including heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, and loading/unloading bulk linen carts in a warehouse setting.
  • Customer Service: Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Prior customer-facing experience is a plus.
  • Equipment Experience: Forklift experience is preferred, but not required (on-the-job training provided).
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to handle changing weekly schedules, operational needs, and mandatory overtime.

Work Hours & Schedule

Weekly hours are typically targeted at 40 hours per week, but hours are not guaranteed and are subject to change based on route coverage needs, delivery volume, and operational demands. Overtime may be required.
