Course fee is reimbursable upon successful completion of employment season. Must be 15 years old by course completion date. Pre-requisites for the course vary by class but generally include:
  • Non-stop 150-300-yard swim (freestyle or breast stroke)
  • 10-pound brick retrieval from 11.5 feet of water
  • Tread water for 2 minutes with legs only
  • Ability to exit the water without the use of a ladder or steps

Licensing, Education, & Other Requirements
  • Current certifications in Lifeguard Training, First-Aid Basics, CPR for Professional Rescuer, and American Red Cross Community CPR.
  • Must possess sufficient knowledge of English grammar, vocabulary and spelling to communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in written form.
  • Storey County requires prospective employees to submit to and pass a background investigation as a condition for employment in this position.

Additional Information
The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by an employee in this position. Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below.
  • Enforces rules and regulations pertaining to pool operation and safety and supervises pool areas when in use.
  • Maintains constant surveillance and visually scans assigned area of responsibility with high frequency (i.e., every 10 seconds). Walks the area to monitor activities, provides directives, and fosters accident prevention.
  • Administers First-Aid and/or CPR as needed; performs water rescue functions.
  • Functions as a crew member within an emergency plan for the handling of accidents in pool areas.
  • Maintains standards of facility sanitation, assisting with cleaning and general maintenance of the facility.
  • Checks visitors into the swimming facility and collects fees.
  • Stock, prepares and serves snack bar food and drinks.
  • Attends meetings and training sessions, as required.
  • Performs duties of cashier as necessary.
  • Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Maintains proper physical fitness, mental alertness, and readiness to meet emergencies.
  • Performs related duties as required.
