Lifeguard - Job Description
This position supports the missions and operations of the Orange County Scouting America and the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center.
The mission of Scouting America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
The mission of The Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center is to serve all youth of Orange County by providing quality outdoor educational programs that instill in them an appreciation of the outdoors and the environment, teach effective teamwork, instruct about the cultural history of Orange County, and provide access to the natural resources of the surrounding areas.
The Lifeguard will be responsible for reporting to the Program and Aquatics Directors. This position is primarily responsible for enforcing safety standards and procedures and providing care as necessary in the aquatics facility at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center (IROEC).
REQUIREMENTS
  • Must maintain current certification as a BSA or Red Cross lifeguard or similar certifying body.
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Ability to work a varying work schedule
  • Desired: Bilingual

JOB DUTIES
  • Assist in tracking and reporting maintenance needs to the Aquatics Area Director
  • Ensure that standards are followed in accordance with American Camp Association and Boy Scouts of Standards.
  • Able to lead IROEC specific procedures including swim checks, orientation talks, shift rotations, and working alongside other staff.
  • Enforce all guidelines, procedures, and standards of the aquatics area, IROEC, and OCBSA.
  • Complete job training including regular in-service training.
  • Perform rescues and provide care to your level of training through the Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR/AED certification.
  • Willing to work with guests of all ages and abilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Must be able to stand or sit outside for long periods of time, and able to withstand exposure to heat, cold, and wind.
  • Must be able to bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and lift objects and equipment up to 35 lbs.
  • Maintain personal physical fitness to ensure a rescue can be made in a timely and effective manner.
