What are some common challenges lifeguards in Virginia might face during peak season, and how can they prepare?

Lifeguards in Virginia often encounter increased crowds and heightened activity during peak season, which can make it challenging to maintain vigilance and manage multiple swimmers. To prepare, lifeguards should participate in regular training drills to sharpen their surveillance and rescue skills, stay updated on emergency protocols, and practice effective communication with both guests and team members. Staying hydrated and alert, as well as rotating stations frequently, also helps reduce fatigue and maintain high standards of safety.

What are Lifeguard VAs?

Lifeguard VAs, or Virtual Assistant Lifeguards, are professionals who provide remote support for aquatic facilities or organizations. They may assist with scheduling lifeguard shifts, managing certification records, coordinating safety training, and handling administrative tasks related to pool operations. Although they do not physically supervise swimmers, their work helps ensure compliance with safety protocols and smooth operations. This allows on-site staff to focus more on direct supervision and emergency response.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lifeguard in Virginia, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lifeguard in Virginia, you need strong swimming ability, knowledge of water safety, and current certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid. Familiarity with rescue equipment, emergency action plans, and facility safety protocols is essential. Excellent communication, vigilance, and quick decision-making are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure the safety of swimmers, prevent accidents, and respond effectively to emergencies.

Job description

Lifeguard
Location: The St. James - Montclair, VA

About The St. James: The St. James is a premier sports, wellness, and entertainment brand, empowering people of all ages to reach their peak potential. Our 450,000-square-foot flagship complex in Springfield, VA, offers a unique combination of world-class sports venues, elite training spaces, recovery amenities, and athletic and wellness programs. We also operate Performance Club locations in Springfield, VA, and Bethesda, MD, providing signature group classes, customized performance training, recovery, and high-performance programming in convenient club settings. From comprehensive training to family-friendly fun, lifestyle events, and sporting experiences, The St. James is your destination to discover your best self.
Our People & Culture: At The St. James, we are in the business of human development. Our success in delivering exceptional guest experiences-experiences that engage, inspire, and delight-depends on our ability to recruit, retain, and cultivate team members who embody the true spirit of hospitality. We seek individuals who are committed to personal and organizational excellence, who are proactive and action-oriented, and who thrive in a collaborative team environment. If you have a passion for service and a dedication to continuous growth, we want you to be part of our team.
Why This Role Matters
The Lifeguard is the frontline safety professional within the Department of Safety & Rescue. This position exists to prevent incidents, recognize risk early, and respond decisively to aquatic and medical emergencies. Lifeguards are entrusted with protecting lives, enforcing safety standards, and representing the department's professionalism in every interaction. Your vigilance, judgment, and readiness directly determine outcomes when seconds matter.
What Sets Us Apart
  • Beyond the Pool: Serve at both traditional pool facilities and open-water waterfront venues in Montclair.
  • Professional Safety Department: Operate within a structured Department of Safety & Rescue-not a standalone lifeguard staff.
  • Advanced Opportunities: Exposure to expanded assignments including waterfront operations, special events, and future triathlon or medical support pathways.
  • Clear Standards & Expectations: Defined protocols, supervision, and accountability-no ambiguity about your role or responsibilities.
  • Development-Focused Culture: Training, feedback, and growth are built into the experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain constant, effective surveillance of assigned aquatic zones
  • Identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, and environmental risks before incidents occur
  • Respond immediately to aquatic rescues and emergency situations
  • Provide basic emergency medical care until relieved by higher-level responders or EMS
  • Enforce facility rules and safety standards consistently and professionally
  • Conduct patron education and reinforce water safety expectations
  • Participate in drills, in-service training, and readiness evaluations
  • Maintain rescue equipment, personal gear, and assigned posts in a state of readiness
  • Communicate clearly with Lifeguard Officers and supervisors during operations and incidents

What You Bring
  • Minimum age of sixteen (16) at time of hire
  • Strong swimming ability and water confidence
  • Ability to remain alert, calm, and decisive under pressure
  • Willingness to learn, train, and accept coaching
  • Professional demeanor and strong situational awareness
  • Previous customer service or team-based experience preferred
  • Participation in organized sports or mission-driven groups preferred

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to perform sustained physical activity including swimming, lifting, pushing, pulling, and dragging up to 150 pounds through open water
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while maintaining vigilance
  • Visual acuity sufficient to recognize people and hazards in and out of the water (correctable to 20/40)
  • Stamina to operate effectively during extended emergency situations

The Opportunity
This role offers more than seasonal employment-it provides real responsibility, real training, and real-world safety experience. As a Lifeguard with The St. James, you will develop decision-making skills, emergency response capability, and professional discipline that translate far beyond aquatics. For those interested in leadership, EMS, or long-term safety roles, this position is a proven entry point.
