Position Summary 

Walsh University is seeking a highly motivated, self-directed and flexible individual who is enthusiastic about contributing to a private, faithfully Catholic institution of higher learning and serving the common good. Walsh University promotes academic excellence, an engaged community, and a commitment to helping students discover their life purpose. The Athletics Division at Walsh University is a member of NCAA Division II that competes in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Graduate Student Coaching Assistant(s) will assist in the teaching and mentoring of team members relative to sport specific skills, NCAA II rules and regulations, individual and team development concepts as well as life skills education under the supervision of the Head Coach of the specified sport.  

If selected, successful, qualified candidates with specific sport skills, will have an opportunity to interview for the following open positions within Athletics:

  • Men's Lacrosse
  • Swim & Dive
  • Men’s and Women’s Tennis

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  •  Assists the head coach in managing and directing the program.
  • Assists the head coach with all aspects of the program including training, practices, player instruction, game preparation, competing and scheduling.
  • Assists in the coordination of travel arrangements.
  • Assists in completion and processing of paperwork as requested.
  • Assists with recruiting including calling prospective student-athletes, evaluating high school and junior college players, and maintaining accurate records and data bases on the NCAA Compliance Assistant program.
  • Works cooperatively with personnel in the athletic department, attends department meetings and activities, and always represents the University in a positive manner when interacting with the community, alumni, coaches, the media and the general public.
  • Responsible for abiding by NCAA II compliance rules and legislation as well as educating student-athletes about those rules.
  • Failure to comply by NCAA II rules will be grounds for discipline and/or termination.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and the Vice President for Athletics/Athletic Director.

Required Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

Must demonstrate an understanding the Walsh University Statement of Faith and a commitment to support the Mission, Vision, Values and Code of Ethical Conduct of Walsh University in accordance with Ex Corde Ecclesiae and the Catholic intellectual tradition. Must also possess the following:

Education: Bachelor's degree is required as well as acceptance/admittance into a Walsh University Graduate Program.

Work Experience: 3+ years’ paying experience as a NCAA collegiate athlete/and or coaching experience in the specific sport for which applying.  Other significant experience relative to coaching and/or the administration of an intercollegiate athletics program may be considered.

Skills and abilities:

  • Professional demeanor and ability to interact with charity towards students,       staff and faculty. Positive attitude a must.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; Word, Excel, Outlook

  • Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent districtwide and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours.
  • Must be able to handle and communicate over loud noises in gymnasium/indoors/outdoors; whistles, crowd noise; yelling and screaming.
