What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Librarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Librarian, you typically need a Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS), strong research skills, and organizational abilities. Familiarity with library management systems, digital archives, and cataloguing tools like MARC or Dewey Decimal Classification is essential. Excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills help librarians engage diverse patrons and collaborate with colleagues. These competencies ensure effective resource management, support lifelong learning, and enhance community access to information.

What do library workers do?

Library workers assist patrons in finding and borrowing materials, organize and maintain collections, and help with research and technology use. They may also plan educational programs, manage digital resources, and support community events. The specific duties depend on the role, such as librarian, library assistant, or technician, but all focus on making information accessible to the public.

What Qualifications Do I Need to Get a Job in a Library?

Different library jobs have varying qualifications. To become a librarian, you need a master’s degree in either library science or information studies. This is important if you work with students in an academic setting. You also need some research experience and a strong awareness of research procedures and tools. Library technicians and assistants need to have a high school diploma or a GED certificate and strong administrative skills. If you are seeking a job in library computer support, you need at least a bachelor’s degree in information technologies.

What are some common challenges faced by library staff when adapting to digital resources and technology?

Library staff often encounter challenges such as staying current with rapidly evolving digital platforms, assisting patrons with varying levels of tech literacy, and integrating new technologies with existing catalog systems. Balancing traditional library services with digital resource management requires ongoing training and flexibility. However, many libraries provide professional development opportunities and foster a supportive team environment to help staff successfully navigate these changes.

Job description

Position Summary...What you'll do...Immigration sponsorship is not available for this role. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.  As marketing evolves through increasingly complex content ecosystems, growing asset volumes, and expanding digital channels, Sam’s Club is focused on ensuring that content is structured, governed, and accessible to drive efficiency and consistency at scale. The Manager, Digital Asset Management (DAM) Librarian plays a critical role in operationalizing this foundation.  This role sits at the intersection of Marketing Strategy, Creative, Brand, Legal/Compliance, Channel teams (Ecom, Paid, Non-Paid), and Product/Technology—ensuring digital assets are properly governed, easily discoverable, and aligned to business and operational needs.  You will bring clarity and structure to complex, cross-functional content workflows—translating business requirements into scalable DAM frameworks, metadata strategies, and operational processes. You will serve as a subject matter expert for DAM governance, taxonomy, and asset lifecycle management, driving alignment between business priorities and DAM platform capabilities.
What You'll Do:
Digital Asset Management (DAM) Governance & Strategic Ownership
  • Own and evolve the DAM governance framework, including metadata standards, taxonomy, naming conventions, and access controls.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for DAM strategy, influencing enterprise standards and best practices.
  • Partner with Creative, Brand, Legal, and Compliance stakeholders to ensure rights management, licensing, and usage governance are consistently applied.
  • Drive adoption of governance standards across business teams through influence, documentation, and enablement.
Metadata & Taxonomy Leadership
  • Design and maintain scalable metadata schemas, controlled vocabularies, and taxonomy structures aligned to business and user needs.
  • Lead initiatives to improve asset discoverability, search relevance, and reuse through structured metadata strategies.
  • Establish quality benchmarks and audit mechanisms to ensure metadata accuracy, consistency, and completeness.
  • Act as the escalation point for complex taxonomy or metadata challenges.
Asset Lifecycle & Operational Excellence
  • Own end-to-end asset lifecycle processes including ingestion, metadata enrichment, versioning, archival, and expiration policies.
  • Define and optimize workflows that ensure assets are organized, compliant, and efficiently managed at scale.
  • Conduct audits and implement controls to maintain a high-quality, compliant asset repository.
Asset Intake, Review & Approval Governance
  • Serve as the final gatekeeper for all assets entering the DAM, ensuring alignment with metadata standards, taxonomy, naming conventions, and quality requirements.
  • Review and approve assets prior to publication to ensure brand compliance, legal/rights adherence, and metadata completeness.
  • Establish and manage intake and approval workflows, including required fields, validation rules, and escalation paths.
  • Partner with Creative, Brand, and Legal teams to resolve asset discrepancies, compliance issues, and approval exceptions.
  • Reject or route back assets that do not meet established standards, providing clear guidance for remediation.
  • Continuously refine intake processes to improve speed, accuracy, and consistency of asset onboarding.
Cross-Functional Influence & Enablement
  • Lead cross-functional alignment with stakeholders to improve DAM usage and integration into business workflows.
  • Develop and deliver training, documentation, and best practices to increase DAM adoption and effective usage.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to partners, translating business needs into DAM structure and governance solutions.
Platform Optimization & Continuous Improvement
  • Identify gaps in DAM processes, tools, and workflows; recommend and drive improvements in partnership with Product and Engineering teams.
  • Influence DAM platform roadmap by advocating for features that enhance metadata management, searchability, and user experience.
  • Define and track KPIs such as asset reuse, search success rate, and metadata completeness to guide optimization efforts.
  • Leverage data and user feedback to continuously improve DAM performance and scalability.
What You'll Bring:
  • 5–8 years of experience in Digital Asset Management (DAM), Marketing Operations, Content Operations, or related fields.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with both business stakeholders (Creative, Brand, Marketing) and technical teams (Product, Engineering).
  • Strong expertise in metadata strategy, taxonomy design, controlled vocabularies, and information architecture.
  • Experience establishing or managing asset intake, review, and approval workflows within a DAM system.
  • Familiarity with enterprise DAM platforms and broader marketing technology ecosystems.
  • Exposure to automation or AI-assisted metadata tagging, content classification, or workflow optimization is a plus.
  • Strong project management and stakeholder alignment skills, with the ability to operate effectively in a matrixed organization.
  • Ability to translate business needs into structured DAM requirements and scalable processes.
  • Analytical mindset with a focus on process improvement, governance, and operational efficiency.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to simplify complex DAM concepts for diverse audiences.
