Job Summary: Seeking a highly motivated and technology savvy individual to serve as a Library Services Associate-Teen for Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh –Downtown. The Teen Library Assistant acts as a mentor and connects teens to resources and opportunities that reflect their interests, respond to their needs within diverse and changing communities, and empower them to be builders of their own future.
Location: CLP-Downtown, Pittsburgh, PA
Work Hours: 37.5 hours per week, days, evenings, and weekend availability required
Compensation: $19.00 per hour

Unit: This position is represented by the United Steelworkers union.
Education and Physical Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or;
  • A minimum of four years of experience at the Employer’s facilities or in an equivalent public service role demonstrating successful application of customer service standards, as determined in the sole discretion of the Employer.
  • The physical ability to bend, stoop, stand for long periods of time, push heavy book trucks, and lift heavy loads (25+ pounds).
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities amp; Experience:
  • Previous experience working with teens in an urban setting is required;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet deadlines, manage assignments and responsibilities effectively in a busy urban library with a diverse public and staff;
  • Outgoing, dynamic, and highly organized individual with a passion for working with teens and building relationships in the community;
  • Commitment to providing high quality customer service in accordance with CLP’s Philosophy of Service;
  • Previous experience presenting learning activities for teens ages 11-19 years strongly preferred;
  • Ability to execute innovative library services to teens and families, especially in regard to equity, diversity, and inclusion;
  • Understanding of the importance of family engagement and ability to apply best practices in family engagement;
  • Ability to recognize current reading, viewing, and listening interests of teens;
  • Knowledge of current technologies, electronic resources, and social media;
  • Ability to implement media mentorship practices;
  • Bilingual or multilingual a plus;
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Working closely with the Library Services Supervisor and other location staff to execute the vision of Teen Services at CLP-Downtown;
  • Developing relationships with all teens in the community to fulfill their informational and recreational needs, which includes job readiness, readers’ advisory and more;
  • Working with the location’s other youth-serving staff to facilitate youth-driven, project-based programs around Connected Learning models that are designed to increase teens’ literacy, technology, collaboration, and community building skills, with a focus on digital media, STEM, and emerging technologies;
  • Welcoming customers and working to develop and build relationships with teens, caregivers and families within the Library and community;
  • Helping to fulfill customers’ informational and recreational needs by providing quality reference and readers advisory using print and electronic resources;
  • Providing high quality customer service to all customers in accordance with CLP’s Philosophy and Standards of Service;
  • Participating in system-wide initiatives, programs, and services, and community outreach efforts, as directed by your manager.
  • Supporting location-wide partnerships;
  • Modeling best practices and encouraging all location staff to connect with and serve teens to ensure a continuum of service;
  • Continuing to cultivate a timely and dynamic teen collection that is representative of the community’s needs under the guidance of the Coordinator of Children’s amp; Teen Collections and Library Services Manager;
  • Managing the Teenspace, including space upkeep, equipment/supplies, behavior, and creating engaging displays; assisting with these tasks at the branch level, as needed;
  • Overseeing the experiences of volunteers in service to teens and teen volunteers, as needed;
  • Assisting with day-to-day operations of the location, which may include circulation, registration, and shelving;
  • Engaging in continuing education opportunities to develop and maintain job skills.
  • Maintaining cooperative working relationships with individuals and agencies serving teens and their families;
