The University of Alabama Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine, Department of Surgery is currently recruiting faculty candidates to be considered for an open rank/open tenure faculty appointment in the Division of Transplantation. The successful candidate will be expected to meet clinical, research and teaching needs, as applicable, in the Department of Surgery. UAB has successfully completed more than 14,000 organ transplants since 1968, when we performed Alabama's first kidney transplant. Today, our nationally ranked hospital - one of the busiest transplant centers in the nation - performs more than 400 transplants annually, including heart, lung, kidney, pancreas, liver, and intestine transplants, as well as multi-organ procedures. In addition to our focus on patient care, we also provide an environment that supports the education of health professionals and encourages advanced research to further medical science.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham, one of three autonomous institutions within The University of Alabama System, is the only four-year, public university in the state's largest metropolitan area. The University spans 100 blocks in the city center with over 250 buildings providing over 13 million feet of assignable space.
For fiscal year 2021-2022 (most recent available), the University's economic impact on the Birmingham area exceeds $12.1 billion to the state. In FY2022, UAB received over $715 million in NIH extramural grants and contracts. As of the fall of 2022, the University employed 26,000 people, had a faculty of 3,176 (~45% of whom are female), and had a student enrollment of just under 22,000 at the undergraduate through doctoral levels. The graduate student population is 64% female and 38% are among ethnic minorities.
UAB is comprised of 10 academic colleges and schools in the health sciences and academic areas. The UAB Academic Health Center includes the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Optometry, Public Health, Health Professions; the Graduate School; and the Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences. The University's academic campus consists of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Schools of Business, Education, and Engineering; the Graduate School; and the Mervyn Sterne Library. Required Qualifications
The successful candidate will hold an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D., and will be an outstanding leader and highly skilled, widely recognized in the field with a strong track record. Candidate should have substantial professional work experience in one or more areas of research, teaching and/or service.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of five (5) years of independent clinical experience as an abdominal transplant surgeon following fellowship training.
Demonstrated expertise in kidney, liver, and pancreas transplantation, including living and deceased donor transplantation across all abdominal organs.
Significant experience in complex organ procurement, including multi-organ recovery and leadership of procurement teams.
Advanced experience in organ preservation and perfusion technologies, including normothermic and hypothermic machine perfusion platforms, ex vivo organ assessment, and emerging preservation strategies.
Ability to manage complex, high-acuity transplant patients across the full perioperative spectrum.
Experience with clinical trials, including protocol development, regulatory oversight, and enrollment in interventional or translational transplant studies.
Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed scholarship, with evidence of academic productivity appropriate for appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher.
Commitment to multidisciplinary collaboration within a comprehensive transplant institute model.
Evidence of excellence in teaching and mentorship of trainees, including residents, fellows, and advanced practice providers.
