Job description

The Research Librarian reports directly to the Library Manager and is primarily responsible for conducting, assisting in, and/or coordinating reference and research projects, as requested by the Firm's attorneys and clients, legal support personnel, and other law librarians.
Responsibilities:
  • Processes incoming research/reference requests and conducts complete and thorough research, using library resources and informational tools; participates in ready-referencing tasks, including working the reference desk, consulting with library users and responding to email requests; ensures compliance with licensing and electronic subscriptions when conducting research; produces client billable research.
  • Conducts in-depth research in a wide range of practice-specific areas of law, competitive intelligence, public records, legislative history, and news media.
  • Performs research on and prepares company and industry profiles in support of business development efforts.
  • Participates in the evaluation and selection of electronic resources and applications as related to legal and library research and resources.
  • Assists library users with access to various electronic legal databases and print resources.
  • Supports the firm's usage of legal and business databases by securing passwords, coordinating introductory and recurring training, and trouble-shooting technical issues.
  • Participates in meetings where educational materials or marketing ideas are conceptualized and developed into strategies or user guides. Develops electronic documents, library guides, fact finders, bibliographies, signage, and other literature or products to facilitate access to the library collection or information resources.
  • High level of interaction with attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants, marketing personnel, vendors, and other firm librarians.
  • Develop expertise in AI resources to enhance research capabilities.
  • Assists with special projects and other tasks as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Strong research and database skills, including proficiency in utilizing research databases such as Lexis+ w/Protege, Westlaw, Intelligize, Courtlink, Bloomberg/BNA, Wolter Kluwers.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications as they relate to library requirements.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common research output, trade publications, and legal industry documents.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and administrative skills.
  • Clear, concise, and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work efficiently under time constraints with interruptions.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently as well as part of a highly collaborative team.
  • Demonstrates aptitude and experience with technology and social media as it relates to the library's projects and initiatives.
  • Strong customer service orientation.

Preferred:
  • Master of Library Science (MLS)
  • Candidates with paralegal experience who have strong research skills and 3 years of experience in law firms will be considered.
