Position Summary

The Lead Engineering Technologist provides advanced technical expertise, leadership, and support for engineering technologies, standards, and business processes that enable the design and delivery of electric utility infrastructure. This role collaborates with engineering, operations, information technology, and business stakeholders to improve workflows, enhance system capabilities, and ensure the effective implementation and utilization of engineering applications and standards.

This role serves as the enterprise owner and primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) for AutoCAD Electrical (ACADE), responsible for standards governance, training, user support, process improvement, and strategic advancement of design automation capabilities across Duke Energy. The position provides technical leadership for design automation initiatives, engineering standards, and continuous improvement efforts supporting transmission and substation engineering organizations. This role serves as a key change agent for the SDS initiative, driving enterprise adoption, stakeholder engagement, and organizational readiness to support successful implementation and long-term program success.

Responsibilities

Enterprise AutoCAD Electrical Leadership

  • Serve as the enterprise Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Autodesk AutoCAD Electrical (ACADE), providing technical leadership, advanced troubleshooting, application support, and strategic direction.

  • Own and maintain enterprise ACADE standards, templates, symbol libraries, catalogs, and associated engineering documentation.

  • Partner with engineering organizations to identify opportunities for design automation, standardization, and workflow optimization.

  • Evaluate, test, and implement software enhancements that improve engineering quality, productivity, and consistency.

  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and coordination for Engineering Technologists, fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and adherence to enterprise standards and best practices.

  • Provide technical consultation and recommendations to engineering leadership regarding design automation technologies, standards, and modernization initiatives.

Standards Governance & Engineering Processes

  • Coordinate the enterprise SDS modernization program for P&C organizations through implementation planning, stakeholder engagement, change management, and adoption of standardized design processes and tools.

  • Provide enterprise stewardship for CAD standards, drafting requirements, and design automation best practices.

  • Foster collaboration among regional engineering representatives, standards committees, master librarians, and technical working groups to support the development, review, and continuous improvement of enterprise standards and practices.

Training, Documentation & Knowledge Management

  • Develop and maintain technical training programs, implementation guides, job aids, troubleshooting resources, and user documentation.

  • Deliver training and mentoring to engineers, designers, technicians, and technical support staff.

  • Maintain knowledge repositories, training libraries, and enterprise user support resources.

  • Support onboarding and workforce development activities related to engineering design applications and standards.

SharePoint & User Community Leadership

  • Maintain and enhance SharePoint sites and collaboration platforms supporting engineering standards, training materials, documentation, and communications.

  • Serve as a primary contact for enterprise ACADE inquiries and coordinate support activities across user communities.

  • Communicate standards updates, software releases, enhancements, and best practices to stakeholders throughout the enterprise.

Systems Integration & Technical Solutions

  • Collaborate with business and IT stakeholders to improve end-to-end engineering workflows and data integration processes.

  • Participate in requirements gathering, business process analysis, testing, implementation, and deployment of technical solutions.

  • Support integration between engineering design applications, asset management systems, and related enterprise platforms.

  • Identify opportunities to improve data quality, user experience, operational efficiency, and engineering productivity.

Automation & Business Applications
  • Support and enhance workflow automation and business process solutions using Microsoft Power Platform technologies.

  • Assist with development and administration of request management systems, forms, and workflow tools.

  • Identify opportunities for automation that reduce manual effort and improve service delivery.

Basic/Required Qualifications
  • Associates degree in Engineering Technology

  • In addition to required degree, eight (8) years related work experience

  • In lieu of Associates degree(s) AND 8 year(s) related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND 10 year(s) related work experience

Desired Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in engineering technology, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related technical discipline.

  • Seven (7) or more years of relevant engineering technology, CAD administration, design automation, engineering systems support, or related experience.

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience with Autodesk AutoCAD Electrical.

  • Experience developing and supporting enterprise engineering standards, workflows, and technical documentation.

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and translate business requirements into technical solutions.

  • Strong communication, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Ability to provide technical leadership across multiple organizations and business functions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Utility transmission or substation engineering experience.

  • Autodesk AutoCAD Electrical administration and configuration experience.

  • Experience developing and governing enterprise CAD standards.

  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor and other engineering design automation platforms.

  • Experience supporting engineering application integrations with enterprise business systems.

  • Experience administering SharePoint sites and knowledge management platforms.

  • Experience with Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI).

  • Experience facilitating standards committees, governance teams, and cross-functional technical workgroups.

  • Experience developing enterprise training curricula, instructional materials, and technical learning programs.

  • Project management and change management experience supporting enterprise technology deployments.

Working Conditions:
  • Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
