Job description

Basic Function Under the supervision of the Library Associate, Circulation, process library materials to ensure their prompt availability to patrons and perform routine public service functions. SALARY: P2A REPORTS TO: Circulation/Bookmobile Services Manager POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None Typical Duties 1. Sort and shelve library materials according to Library of Congress Classification and other filing systems.

2. Assist patrons with self-check, answer directional questions, and handle other minimal patron interactions. 3.

Shelf read, clean, straighten, and shift library stacks. Prepare, stock, and pull book sale items and Alaska Library Consortium (ALC) transactions. 4.

Check in/out library materials using computerized system; interpret basic messages from multiple computerized systems. Search library system item sorting. 5.

Inspect library materials for condition, clean covers, perform minor taping of pages and similar damage mitigation tasks as needed. 6. Empty book drops; pick up library materials left in public areas.

7. Monitor library and report any safety incidents and problems immediately. 8.

Help prepare library for opening/closing; replenish supplies; sharpen pencils; clean computer screens, and keyboards; and similar tasks 9. Work on other library special projects as assigned. 10.

Occasional clearing of bookdrop walkway/areas of snow & spread sand (for intermittent workday "inclement" situations) 11. Perform routine collection inventory tasks. Position Requirements MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1.

Demonstrated ability to file alphanumerically. 2. Demonstrated ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

3. Previous library work experience preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 1.

Ability to work effectively and courteously with the general public and other staff members. 2. Ability to work efficiently and independently.

3. Awareness of the purposes and functions of a public library and the ability to learn routine library procedures. 4.

Ability to perform repetitious tasks for extended periods with accuracy. OTHER 1. A proficiency test may be administered.

2. This position requires a criminal background investigation and fingerprinting. Additional Information JOB CONTACTS: Frequent business contact with other employees in own department; continuous routine public contact.

JOB RESPONSIBILITY: Does not supervise; mostly routine with a few minor problems, supervisor usually required for help and instruction; the consequences of error, carelessness or mistaken judgement require minimal effort to recover. No more than 25% of the employee's scheduled work time may be spent performing minor clerical duties of a routine nature entailing minimal responsibility. WORK ENVIRONMENT: General office where conditions are pleasant; good, clean conditions where accidents/hazards are negligible; requires short periods of moderate lifting (26-50 lbs.), pushing or pulling carts, crouching, stooping, and stretching
