Library Assistant - Circulation


Summary

The Library Assistant-Circulation handles patron-facing circulation functions and workroom operations.


Schedule

  • Up to 24 hours per week
  • Flexible Schedule
  • Occasional Saturdays and evenings are required based on the needs of the Library

Essential Functions

  1. Register new library patrons and issue library cards
  2. Facilitate circulation functions in-person or by phone
  3. Check in and sort books and other media and empty book drops
  4. Assist patrons with printing, copying, and scanning documents, and troubleshoot public computer problems
  5. Promote and instruct patrons in the use of library e-resources
  6. Manage study room usage
  7. Help patrons identify and acquire desired material through readers advisory, holds, and Interlibrary Loan
  8. Accurately record cash receipts and other monetary transactions at desk
  9. Assist with volunteer training and assigning tasks
  10. Promote a pleasant, welcoming, and organized atmosphere in the library for staff and patrons
  11. Enforce the Library's Code of Conduct Policy
  12. Maintain confidentiality and ethical behavior in all library matters

Other Functions

  1. Perform building opening and closing procedures
  2. Shelving books and media
  3. Book repair
  4. Complete required continuing education
  5. Perform other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to stand, sit, and walk for extended periods of time and intermittently
  2. Ability to lift 30 pounds, push/pull carts/crates weighing 50 pounds, and shelve materials on high as well as low shelves
  3. Dexterity is mandatory as this job requires frequent use of hands and fingers
  4. Ability to complete keyboard entry
  5. Ability to talk, hear, and see


Required Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent


Preferred Education and Experience

Associate's or bachelor's degree

Ability to speak a language in addition to English


Additional Eligibility Requirements

Must pass Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Fingerprint Based Federal Criminal History Check.
