A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A LIBRARY ASSISTANT I

As a Library Assistant l, you spend your day providing high quality service, as well as promoting an accommodating, welcoming library environment. Your work typically involves providing assistance to library patrons by registering borrowers, issue library cards, and keep records of new registrants. Assisting patrons with researching and obtaining information from the library or archival collections and assisting with entire operations of the café shop generally fill up your day. Your job is essential to the city, and you assist the department staff with cultural events/programs by planning/coordinating library events. You are constantly on your toes and ready for any new and unexpected challenges that may arise in the city. This can include assisting with drafting press releases and set-up for events/programs.

When you aren't assisting with events/programs, you generally are at the library cataloging/processing new and donated materials. You also ensure to repair books, DVDs, and audiobooks and withdraw damaged/dated library materials. You enjoy being helpful and have no problem providing assistance and support to other divisions within the department as needed. The city needs someone like you with skills in customer service, computers, and you find genuine enjoyment in what you do!

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A LIBRARY ASSISTANT I

  • Required Education: High school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalency
    • Education Preference: Associates Degree
  • Required Work Experience: No experience required
  • Intermediate computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment; includes Excel, Word, Publisher, database management, and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of Dewey Decimal System
  • Must be bilingual in English and Spanish required.
  • Must have a current and valid class "C" driver's license from the Texas Department of Public Safety
