Introduction
Join Our Team as a Community Outreach Librarian!
Prince William Public Libraries Community Outreach Services Department in Woodbridge, VA, is seeking a motivated, organized, and public-spirited Librarian to expand our reach beyond physical library locations.
As a key member of our team, you will spend the majority of your time engaging the public through our Mobile Library-planning and delivering enriching programs, assisting senior patrons, and connecting Prince William County residents with essential library resources. This is an exciting opportunity for an adaptable professional passionate about community engagement and accessible service.
About This Role:
As the Librarian for Community Outreach Services, you will bring library programs, resources, and services directly to the Prince William County community. Splitting your time between community visits on the Mobile Library and program planning, you will focus on senior engagement, adult programming, and strategic local partnerships.
Key Responsibilities:
Mobile Library & Community Outreach
  • Drive and operate the Mobile Library to deliver full library services across Prince William County.
  • Create, manage, and coordinate the Mobile Library/Bookmobile route schedules.
  • Represent Prince William Public Libraries (PWPL) at community festivals, schools, and local outreach events.
  • Build and nurture community partnerships to expand off-site services.

Programming & Patron Services
  • Plan, deliver, and evaluate engaging programs for adults and seniors, while assisting with multi-generational and youth outreach (including storytimes, tours, and family events).
  • Provide exceptional customer service, reference assistance, and hands-on technology support in person, over the phone, and via email.
  • Maintain program records, attendance data, and outreach statistics.

Collection & Staff Leadership
  • Help curate and manage a diverse, relevant library collection.
  • Train and support staff and volunteers assigned to outreach initiatives.
  • Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and ongoing training opportunities.

Minimum Requirements: Master's Degree in Library or Information Science
Preferences:
  • Two years of experience working in a public library
  • Experience working on a mobile library or bookmobile.
  • Experience planning, promoting, implementing, and conducting programs for patrons of all ages.
  • Experience with an Integrated Library System (ILS).
  • Experience utilizing public library resources in both digital and physical formats.
  • Experience using scheduling software, such as LibCal or Communico.
  • Experience using computers, mobile devices, tablets, e-readers, and library databases.
  • Experience assisting patrons with technology, including computers, printers, copiers, scanners, tablets, and e-readers.
  • Experience with collection maintenance activities, including processing holds, shelving materials, weeding collections, inventory, and maintaining the organization of library materials.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, Microsoft Teams, and Webex.

Special Requirements: The position may require travel to other branches within the system. A DMV check will be conducted for employees who drive while on County business.
Work Schedule: Schedule will depend on the needs of the department. Library staff Hours are normally Monday - Friday, 9 am - 5 pm, but will also include evening and weekend hours depending on outreach requests.
Hiring Salary Range: $65,910.00 - $79,408.88 Annually

This is a full-time, 37.5-hour-per-week, exempt position. The schedule includes weekdays and occasional weekends, with the possibility of evening shifts as needed. Work hours are generally Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, with occasional Saturdays for outreach events. The schedule may vary depending on the needs of the library. Flexibility is imperative.
