What is liaison engineering?

Liaison engineering is a specialized field within engineering that focuses on facilitating communication and problem-solving between different departments, such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance, typically within the aerospace, automotive, or manufacturing industries. Liaison engineers act as intermediaries to resolve issues that arise during the production process, ensuring that products meet design specifications and quality standards. They analyze engineering drawings, recommend modifications, and coordinate activities to prevent or resolve production delays. Their work is crucial in maintaining efficient workflows and upholding product quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Liaison Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Liaison Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, problem-solving, and technical drawing interpretation, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, product lifecycle management systems, and knowledge of regulatory standards are often required. Exceptional communication, teamwork, and negotiation skills help bridge gaps between design, manufacturing, and other stakeholders. These skills ensure effective coordination and resolution of engineering issues, leading to efficient production and high-quality outcomes.

What is the difference between Liaison Engineering vs Quality Assurance Engineer?

AspectLiaison EngineeringQuality Assurance Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications like PMP or PE often preferredEngineering or related degree, certifications like CQE or CQA beneficial
Work EnvironmentCollaborative, cross-departmental, client-facingTesting labs, development teams, process-focused
Industry UsageManufacturing, aerospace, automotive, techSoftware, manufacturing, healthcare, tech
Primary FocusFacilitating communication between engineering teams and clients or suppliersEnsuring product quality through testing and process improvements

While Liaison Engineering focuses on bridging communication between engineering teams and external stakeholders, Quality Assurance Engineers concentrate on testing and improving product quality. Both roles require technical knowledge and collaboration skills but serve different purposes within the product development lifecycle.

What are some common challenges Liaison Engineers face when working between design and manufacturing teams?

Liaison Engineers often encounter challenges in translating design intent into manufacturable solutions while balancing the priorities of both design and production teams. Miscommunications or differing priorities between departments can require strong negotiation and problem-solving skills. Additionally, Liaison Engineers must quickly address unexpected production issues, ensuring that any proposed solutions do not compromise product quality or project timelines. Building effective relationships and maintaining clear, ongoing communication are key to overcoming these challenges.

If you thrive in fast-paced, hands-on environments and excel at turning technical challenges into actionable solutions, this is your opportunity to make a tangible impact on world-class aerospace programs.

What You’ll Do

In this high-impact role, you will:

  • Serve as the engineering authority on the production floor, supporting aircraft build and post-production activities

  • Assess and resolve product and process issues across the full lifecycle

  • Lead root cause analysis and develop dispositions for design non-conformances

  • Create interim and final engineering solutions for complex structural and systems issues

  • Implement product and process improvements to enhance quality and efficiency

  • Analyze reported problems for potential safety risks and manage resolutions

  • Collaborate closely with production teams, suppliers, and Integrated Product Teams (IPTs)

  • Interpret and apply engineering drawings, specifications, and design standards

  • Support aircraft repair activities, including structural analysis and repair design

  • Ensure compliance with engineering and quality standards across build partners

  • Contribute to technical training, documentation, and customer communications

  • Participate in investigation teams for in-service issues and repair solutions

What You BringRequired Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Aeronautical, Mechanical, Electrical, Systems Engineering, or related field

  • 5+ years of experience in:

    • Structural and/or electrical repair design for aircraft systems

    • Material review or product review within commercial aviation (OEM or airline)

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make timely engineering decisions in production environments

  • Ability to work onsite in an active factory setting with physical and environmental considerations

  • Must be eligible to obtain a Security Clearance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience in:

    • Root cause analysis and non-conformance disposition development

    • Avionics troubleshooting, wiring systems, or aircraft electrical systems

  • Experience with MRB/UPR approval authority

  • Background in executive interior installations or aircraft modification programs
