LG Energy Solution Michigan Inc. (LGESMI) develops and manufactures large lithium-ion polymer batteries and packs for electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage applications. Come join the leader in advanced EV batteries! www.lgenergymi.com

Summary:
The Senior Engineer, Battery Formation Equipment is an ESMI-based equipment engineer responsible for providing specialized formation-equipment expertise and field application support to LG Energy Solution and affiliated manufacturing entities throughout North America.

This position provides engineering support for the technical delivery, installation, commissioning, acceptance, stabilization, troubleshooting, and modification of battery formation and inspection systems, including Formation AC/DC switching, Jig Formation, Open Circuit Voltage (OCV), and Direct Current Internal Resistance (DCIR) equipment. The position serves as a technical interface among equipment suppliers, engineering, manufacturing, quality, logistics, field service, and customer teams from initial requirements through production readiness.

The Senior Engineer travels to North American manufacturing sites to support new-line launches and production ramp-ups, resolve complex equipment and interface issues, coordinate corrective actions, and transfer specialized formation-equipment knowledge to locally hired engineers, technicians, maintenance personnel, and production teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide specialized battery formation-equipment and field application support to ESMI and other LG Energy Solution or affiliated North American manufacturing entities.
  • Provide engineering leadership and hands-on technical support throughout the delivery lifecycle for Formation AC/DC switching, Jig Formation, OCV, DCIR, and related battery formation and inspection systems.
  • Translate manufacturing requirements into equipment scope, technical specifications, interface requirements, schedules, acceptance criteria, and site-execution plans.
  • Coordinate engineering, manufacturing, quality, logistics, installation, field service, equipment suppliers, contractors, and customer teams to achieve project milestones.
  • Manage equipment build, factory testing, shipment, installation, commissioning, site acceptance, production-readiness, and ramp-stabilization activities.
  • Plan and support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT); verify equipment performance, document results, and drive closure of open items.
  • Lead on-site installation, setup, commissioning, performance verification, and handover activities for formation and inspection equipment.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex electrical, control, communication, equipment-interface, process-sequence, and performance issues during commissioning and production ramp-up.
  • Conduct root-cause analysis of recurring equipment faults, acceptance gaps, and production interruptions; coordinate and verify corrective and preventive actions.
  • Evaluate equipment modifications and technical countermeasures required to improve stability, reliability, throughput, maintainability, and production readiness.
  • Monitor technical schedules, risks, scope changes, action-item lists, issue escalation, and milestone progress across multiple sites and stakeholder groups.
  • Prepare and maintain technical reports, test records, issue logs, acceptance documentation, change records, handover packages, and customer-facing project materials.
  • Review electrical drawings, equipment layouts, interface documents, specifications, and installation requirements for completeness and field applicability.
  • Coordinate equipment and utility interfaces with plant engineering, manufacturing, facilities, IT, quality, maintenance, and safety functions.
  • Provide clear technical and project-status reporting to management, customers, suppliers, and cross-functional teams; escalate critical risks and recovery needs promptly.
  • Train locally hired engineers, technicians, maintenance personnel, and production teams on formation-equipment architecture, operation, acceptance requirements, troubleshooting, and ramp-support practices.
  • Mentor local field application and project personnel so that specialized formation-equipment knowledge can be sustained within North American operations.
  • Provide on-site support during new plant launches, major equipment failures, production interruptions, and other critical manufacturing events.
  • Travel frequently to manufacturing facilities throughout North America based on project and operational requirements.
