NASTAD represents public health officials in all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, seven local jurisdictions, and the U.S. Pacific Island jurisdictions. 

Job Description

Team: Policy and Legislative Affairs
Salary Range: $20.00 per hour
Hours and Duration: 20 hours per week from September through December
Location: Remote 
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt 
NASTAD Position Level and Job Family: Intern, Policy & Legislative Affairs
Work Requirements: This position offers flexibility for in-person, remote, or hybrid work arrangements in Washington, D.C., while adhering to Eastern Time (ET) hours. 

Position Summary

The Legal Research Intern will assist the Legal Research team with the implementation of key activities under NASTAD's health systems legal and policy portfolio, including conducting public health legal research, synthesizing complex policy material, and supporting the development of deliverables to aid health department efforts to navigate federal, state, and local laws and policies.  This position will provide the Legal Research Intern with the opportunity to expand their legal research and policy analysis skills in a meaningful way that supports public health efforts related to HIV programs. 

Essential Duties

  • Conduct statutory and regulatory research on topics related to HIV and hepatitis policy issues and legislation. 
  • Assist in the development of resources, reports, tools/toolkits, and other materials based on legal research conducted. 
  • Execute amendments to existing NASTAD statutory and regulatory research products to ensure accuracy of information. 
  • Oversee updates to NASTAD's 50-state jurisdictional analysis of HIV data privacy and HIV transmission laws. 
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Capability to manage multiplepriorities and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment while maintaining strong attention to detail. 
  • Strong research, writing and communication skills. 
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently. 
  • Familiarity and skill in legal research using Westlaw. 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. 

Experience/Education 

  • Bachelor's degree or higher or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experiencethatdemonstrates thecandidate'sability to perform the position's duties. 
  • Accomplished a minimum of one year of law school and currently in the process of receiving Juris Doctorate. 
  • Completed at least one Legal Research and Writing course through Juris Doctorate program. 
  • Preference of one previous intern or work experience in a legal office.
