About the Team

The Corporate Legal Team, are strategic legal partners to the Canada Business who support commercial contracting relating to third party management and matters arising from business expansion strategies. We focus acutely on managing risk and facilitating business initiatives as a horizontal function.

About the Role

Reporting to the Director, Assistant General Counsel, Corporate Legal Team, you will have a broad range of responsibilities in providing legal guidance in relation to employment and contract matters, as well as generally supporting the legal advice needs of the Canadian business. You will partner closely with business teams and stakeholders to support initiatives to provide practical and timely advice to ensure our operations are well managed. You will have the opportunity to be innovative while ensuring that we manage risk to meet legal and regulatory requirements.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Support business expansion and issues arising from an increasingly globalized workforce in a federally regulated Bank.
  • Conduct legal research and translate legal advice into practical business terms.
  • Advise on new and upcoming legislation and regulatory expectations.
  • Develop legal guidance and other tools to support business partners to operate in complex legal spaces.
  • Draft, review and negotiate commercial agreements including third party agreements requiring familiarity with OSFI B10 Guidelines.
  • Participates in cross-functional teams to address special projects, such as implementation of legislation, new products, and risk management.
  • Perform other responsibilities as requested.
Basic Qualifications:
  • A law degree (LLB or JD) from an accredited law school and license to practice in Ontario.
  • 5+ years experience gained in private practice, government, or in-house.
  • Knowledge of the business and regulatory environment in which Capital One (Canada Branch) operates.
  • Strong legal research ability.
  • Fluency translating legal advice into actionable guidance for business teams.
  • Ability to manage a large volume of work, including complex legal issues with minimal supervision.
  • Ability and willingness to work as a team player, and comfort interacting with associates across various departments and job levels.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple deliveries and manage expectations with a growth and possibilities mindset.

The expected annual salary range for this position is $157,400 to $179,600. This role is also eligible to earn performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es). Incentives could be discretionary or non-discretionary depending on the plan.
