Job description

Who We Are

Flagship Pioneering is a biotechnology company that invents and builds platform companies that change the world. We bring together the greatest scientific minds with entrepreneurial company builders and assemble the capital to allow them to take courageous leaps. Those big leaps in human health and sustainability exponentially accelerate scientific progress in areas ranging from cancer detection and treatment to nature-positive agriculture.ย ย

What sets Flagship apart is our ability to advance biotechnology by uniting life science innovation, company creation, and capital investment under one roof in a way that is largely without precedent. Our scientific founders, entrepreneurial leaders, and professional capital managers are each aligned around an institutionalized process that enables us to innovate and transform for the benefit of people and planet.ย ย

Many of the companies Flagship has founded have addressed humanity's most urgent challenges: vaccinating billions of people against COVID-19, curing intractable diseases, improving human health, preempting illness, and feeding the world by improving the resiliency and sustainability of agriculture.ย

Flagship has been recognized twice on FORTUNE's "Change the World" list, an annual ranking of companies that have made a positive social and environmental impact through activities that are part of their core business strategies, and has been twice named to Fast Company's annual list of the World's Most Innovative Companies.

Associate Director, AI Operations & Enablementย

The Enterprise AI team sits within Flagship's Information Technology organization andย is responsible forย AI strategy, governance, tooling, and enablement across the Flagship ecosystem.ย The team works cross-functionally within IT, Legal, Finance, HR, Communications, and the firm's business and scientific functions to ensure AI is adopted safely, responsibly, and with measurable impact.ย

About the Roleย

Flagship is hiring an Associate Director, AI Operations & Enablement toย accelerateย theย impactย of the Enterprise AI function. Reporting to the Senior Director, AI Transformation Lead, this person will own day-to-day execution across three core capability areas: AI education and capability building, AI strategy and use case portfolio management, and AI tool and vendor management.ย

This is an inaugural role on a small, high-visibility team. The successful candidate willย operateย as a senior individual contributor with broad cross-functional reach, partnering closelyย with developers, scientists, andย business leaders.ย The role is execution-heavy and ideal for someone who has led enterprise AI programs in a consulting or in-house capacity and is energized by building a function from the ground up.ย

What You'll Doย

AI Strategy, Governance & Use Case Portfolio Managementย

  • Translate Flagship's enterprise AI strategy into function-level execution by partnering with leaders across the firm on AI roadmap creation and delivery.ย
  • Run a regular cadence of engagement with each business and scientific function to surface,ย intake, and prioritize use cases.ย ย
  • Partner with the AI engineering team to shape use cases, supporting use case owners inย identifyingย the right data, technology, and stakeholders for efficient and effective design.ย ย
  • Track use case value/ROIย throughout the life cycleย and for the AI program overall.ย
  • Drive solution reuse across functions byย maintainingย visibility into what has been built, by whom, and what is reusable.ย
  • Operateย the AI Operational Governance Forum by surfacing relevant AIย product,ย feature, and use case developments and supporting decision-making andย tracking aroundย risk management.ย
  • Support the evolution of Flagship's AI strategy, policies,ย and roadmap by stayingย up to dateย on relevant industry trends and internal needs.ย ย

AI Education & Capability Buildingย

  • Design and execute AI learning programs across the company that drive adoption while shaping responsible, secure, and cost-effective use of AI.ย ย
  • Build andย overseeย operations for the AI change champion networkย to scaleย AI adoption.ย
  • Develop reusableย AIย enablementย assetsย and partner withย Communicationsย andย Learning & Developmentย to amplify.ย
  • Provide hands-on coaching to teams adoptingย AI tools across the business.ย

AI Tool & Vendor Managementย

  • Provide support on AI tool evaluation, procurement, and lifecycle management across enterprise-wide and function-specific applications.ย
  • Support ownership, administration, and governance of core enterprise AI platforms, including settings configuration, feature rollout, internal communications, and ongoing user support.ย
  • Supportย vendor relationships and contractsย in partnership with Procurement and Legal; track usage, licenseย utilization, and consumption against contracted commitments.ย
  • Coordinate with InfoSec on AI-specific risk reviews, ZDR posture, agentic sandbox governance, and shadow AI monitoring.ย
  • Maintain the AI tool intake and approval process and the AI Product / Use Case records in Flagship's GRC system of record.ย

What You Bringย

Requiredย

  • Atย least 5 yearsย of progressive experience in technology, AI, digital transformation, or management consulting roles, including meaningful recent experience leading enterprise AI, digital, or technology enablement initiatives.ย
  • Hands-on AI fluency.ย Powerย userย of leading LLM platforms (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini) with practical understanding of capabilities, limitations, andย appropriate useย by task type. Comfortable rapidly prototyping with low-code tools and AI features.ย
  • Agentic AI fluency.ย Working understanding of agentic AI concepts and current capabilities, including autonomous and long-running agents, multi-step tool use, MCP and connector ecosystems, and human-in-the-loop design patterns. Able to evaluate where agentic approaches areย appropriate, where they introduce risk, and how to deploy them safely.ย
  • Use case portfolio management.ย Demonstrated experience running structured intake, prioritization, and ROI tracking processes for AI or digital initiatives across a federated organization.ย
  • Vendor and tool management.ย Experience evaluating, contracting, and administering enterprise SaaS, ideally including AI/LLM platforms. Comfort working with Procurement, Legal, and InfoSec on contract review, DPAs, and risk assessments.ย
  • Enablement and program delivery.ย Track recordย running training programs, hackathons, or change management initiatives for non-technical audiences at scale.ย
  • Cross-functional execution.ย Demonstrated effectivenessย operatingย without direct authority across IT, InfoSec, Legal, Finance, HR, and business stakeholders.ย
  • Communication.ย Strong written and verbal communication; able to translate between technical and business audiences and produce executive-ready materials.ย
  • Client-facing experience.ย Previousย experience inย a client-facing consulting, customer success, or IT business partner role.ย
  • Bachelor's degreeย in a technical, business, or scientific field.ย

Preferredย

  • Prior experience in life sciences, biotech, or healthcare; comfort with the regulatory and IP-sensitivity considerations of these sectors.ย
  • Experience administering Claude Enterprise, ChatGPT Enterprise, or M365 Copilot at scale.ย
  • Familiarity with AI governance frameworks (NIST AI RMF, ISO 42001) andย GxPย / research integrity considerations.ย
  • Experience with MCP servers, agentic platforms,ย andย AI workflow automation tools (Zapier,ย Workato).ย
