Job description

Performs technical duties and limited professional duties, under the supervision of attending pharmacist, involving compounding and dispensing medications as prescribed by physicians or other qualified prescribers. The pharmacy intern will practice only within the scope of a valid intern classification from the state board of pharmacy and will assist with pharmacy duties while being responsible for learning the systems and the ability to manage them properly by the time the intern is licensed.


  1. The pharmacy intern will assist with and be responsible for learning:
  2. The unit dose distribution system, intravenous admixture service and aseptic technique.
  3. Procedures for merchandise and inventory control, and financial management including participation in economical use of supplies, products and resources.
  4. Monitoring of patient medication therapy.
  5. Quality control procedures involved in intravenous admixture and unit dose medications.
  6. Departmental interactions with administration, nursing, and ancillary staff.
  7. Provide clinical drug information to meet the needs of the physician, nurse and patient.
  8. Interpretation of medication orders, scheduling medications, maintaining profiles, and proper selection and control of medication.
  9. Participating in hospital performance improvement activities.
  10. Supporting and following hospital policies and procedures, performing only within the legal scope of practice, and following professional standards.
  11. Performing special projects and other related duties as assigned.
  12. Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
  13. Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook
  14. Must adhere to the DCH Behavioral Standards including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues and with self.
  15. Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software and intranet.
  16. Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  17. All other duties as assigned.

Must have necessary experience and educational requirements to hold a valid intern classification from the State Board of Pharmacy.  Will have frequent contact with physicians, nurses, patients and other professional personnel as well as the public. Must follow hospital behavioral standards and learn to demonstrate poise and the ability to communicate professional knowledge. Ability to meet facility behavioral standards, competency expectations and work well with a team.  Must be able to read, write legibly, speak and comprehend English.
