What is a legacy warehouse?

A Legacy Warehouse refers to a traditional storage facility or distribution center that typically uses older systems and processes for managing inventory and logistics. These warehouses may rely more on manual operations or outdated technology rather than modern automated or cloud-based solutions. Companies often operate legacy warehouses when transitioning to newer systems, or when certain products and workflows are better supported by established processes. Understanding the difference between legacy and modern warehouses can help businesses optimize their supply chain and plan upgrades. Updating a legacy warehouse can involve significant investment in technology, training, and change management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a warehouse associate?

To thrive as a Warehouse Associate, you need strong organizational skills, physical stamina, attention to detail, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), barcode scanners, forklifts, and inventory control software is typically required. Effective communication, teamwork, and dependability are crucial soft skills that help maintain a productive and safe work environment. These skills and qualities ensure accurate inventory handling, efficient workflow, and the smooth operation of warehouse logistics.

What are some common challenges faced by employees working in a legacy warehouse, and how can they be addressed?

Employees in a legacy warehouse often encounter challenges such as outdated inventory management systems, manual processes, and limited automation. These factors can lead to inefficiencies and increased likelihood of errors. To address these challenges, team members are encouraged to communicate effectively, stay organized, and be proactive in identifying process improvements. Many organizations also offer training on new technologies and encourage collaboration with IT or process improvement teams to modernize operations over time.

Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior SAP WM/EWM Functional Consultant to drive warehouse digitization and enterprise ERP transformation. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and configuring end-to-end warehouse execution processes, with a heavy emphasis on RF/handheld device integration and transition from legacy ERP systems to SAP ECC or SAP S/4HANA.

The ideal candidate brings deep domain knowledge in warehousing and logistics, proven expertise in configuring mobile warehouse execution (ITSmobile, RF Framework, Barcode/RFID scanning), and a strong track record of migrating legacy warehouse operations into SAP environments with minimal operational disruption.

Key Responsibilities

Legacy ERP to SAP Migration & Transformation

  • Lead functional architecture and design for migrating warehouse operations from legacy ERP/WMS applications to SAP ECC or SAP S/4HANA (EWM / Embedded EWM).
  • Map legacy warehouse master data, inventory structures, bin topologies, and operational workflows to SAP standard and custom solutions.
  • Define and execute data migration strategies for WM/EWM data objects (Storage Bins, Stock Balances, Packaging Specifications, Hazard Data) using LTMC, MWB, or custom migration scripts.
  • Drive cutover planning, initial physical inventory load, open order conversion, and go-live readiness validations for warehouse facilities.

Handheld & Mobile Device Implementation

  • Architect, configure, and deploy mobile warehouse execution solutions using SAP RF Framework, ITSmobile, SAP Fiori, or third-party mobile middleware.
  • Design custom RF screens, RF logical transactions, barcode/QR code parsing logic, and user-guided mobile workflows for picking, putaway, physical inventory, cycle counting, and goods movements.
  • Partner with hardware vendors and internal infrastructure teams to integrate handheld terminals, wearable scanners, vehicle-mounted devices, and industrial printers.
  • Conduct site readiness testing, wireless signal/network latency validation for handheld usage, and hardware troubleshooting during rollout.

SAP WM/EWM Core Functional Execution

  • Configure core SAP WM/EWM modules including:
  • Inbound Processing
  • Outbound Processing
  • Internal Movements
  • Physical Inventory
  • Slotting & Rearrangement
  • Wave Management
  • Kitting

Integrate SAP WM/EWM seamlessly with adjacent modules including:

  • SAP MM (Materials Management)
  • SAP SD (Sales & Distribution)
  • SAP PP (Production Planning)
  • SAP QM (Quality Management)
  • Write detailed Functional Specification Documents (FSDs) for custom RICEFW developments, including custom RF transactions, interfaces to automated material handling systems (MHE/PLC), labels, and reporting.

Testing, Deployment & Operational Support

  • Lead end-to-end testing cycles (Unit Testing, SIT, UAT) using actual handheld scanners and simulated warehouse scenarios.
  • Create training documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quick-reference guides tailored for warehouse operators using handheld units.
  • Provide hypercare support, issue resolution, and performance tuning for critical warehouse operations during go-live phases.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience: 6-10+ years of hands-on functional implementation and support experience in SAP WM and SAP EWM (S/4HANA Embedded EWM or Decentralized EWM).
  • Migration Track Record: At least two full lifecycle implementations involving migration from a legacy ERP/WMS environment (e.g., Manhattan, AS400, JDA, RedPrairie, or home-grown systems) to SAP ECC or SAP S/4HANA.
  • Handheld/Mobile Device Expertise: Demonstrated experience configuring and deploying RF devices, handheld barcode scanners, and custom RF transactions using ITSmobile or EWM RF Framework.
  • Functional Integration: Strong understanding of integration points with SAP MM, SD, PP, and QM modules.
  • Technical Interface Knowledge: Experience with IDocs, APIs, EDI, and interface mapping between SAP and external automation/logistics systems.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline.

Preferred Skills & Certifications

  • Certifications: SAP Certified Application Associate - Extended Warehouse Management (S/4HANA) and/or SAP WM Certification.
  • Modern SAP UI: Familiarity with SAP Fiori applications for EWM and warehouse operations.
  • Methodologies: Experience working in Agile/Scrum delivery models for SAP implementations.
  • Change Management: Strong leadership and communication skills to train and transition warehouse personnel to new digital tools and processes.
