What is leather production?

Leather production is the process of transforming raw animal hides or skins into durable, usable leather through a series of treatments, including cleaning, tanning, dyeing, and finishing. The goal is to create a material that is flexible, strong, and resistant to decay, suitable for products such as shoes, bags, clothing, and furniture. The process involves various techniques and can be carried out in industrial tanneries or by traditional artisans. Environmental considerations and sustainability practices are also important aspects of modern leather production.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals in leather production, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in leather production often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent product quality, managing environmental regulations, and ensuring the safety of workers around chemicals and machinery. Overcoming these issues involves implementing strict quality control procedures, staying up-to-date with environmental compliance standards, and providing regular training on safe operating practices. Additionally, effective communication with other departments, such as design and supply chain, is essential to ensure smooth workflow and timely delivery of finished products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Leather Production, and why are they important?

To thrive in Leather Production, you need a solid understanding of leather grading, cutting, and finishing techniques, often supported by vocational training or relevant work experience. Familiarity with industrial sewing machines, tanning processes, and quality control systems is typically required. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and problem-solving skills are valued soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure consistent product quality, efficient workflow, and adherence to safety and environmental standards.

Job description

Build Products That Matter.

At Leatherman, we don’t just make tools — we create products people rely on every day, in the field, at work, at home, and in life’s unexpected moments.

We’re looking for a highly curious, analytical, and driven Associate Product Line Manager (APLM) to join our Product Management team. This is not a passive coordinator role. This is an opportunity for an ambitious early-career professional to develop into a future product leader inside one of the world’s most iconic product brands.

If you thrive in fast-moving environments, love solving problems, enjoy digging into data and consumer behavior, and want to help shape the future of innovative products, we want to hear from you.

This role is designed as a leadership pipeline position with long-term growth opportunities into Product Line Management, Senior Product Leadership, Product Marketing, Sales, or broader commercial leadership roles.

What You’ll Do

As an Associate Product Line Manager, you’ll partner closely with Sr. Business Unit Managers and cross-functional teams to help drive products from concept through launch and beyond.

You’ll help uncover opportunities, analyze business performance, support innovation initiatives, and contribute to the strategic direction of Leatherman’s product portfolio.

This role is heavily execution-focused and requires strong ownership, initiative, and intellectual curiosity.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Supporting product roadmap development and long-range planning
  • Conducting pricing, margin, sales, and financial analysis
  • Identifying consumer, category, and competitive insights
  • Helping evaluate new product concepts and innovation opportunities
  • Supporting product positioning and go-to-market recommendations
  • Assisting with rapid test-and-learn initiatives and prototype evaluations
  • Gathering insights from trade shows, customer visits, and consumer research
  • Collaborating across Product, Engineering, Marketing, Operations, Sales, and Finance
  • Building tools, templates, and processes that improve product development workflows

What Makes Someone Successful in This Role

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Strong analytical horsepower and business curiosity
  • Excellent instincts around consumers, products, and trends
  • Confidence working with data and translating insights into recommendations
  • A self-starter mentality with a “go get it” attitude
  • The ability to learn quickly and operate independently
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • The drive and ambition to grow into larger leadership responsibilities over time

This role is ideal for someone who wants to build a long-term career in product management and business leadership.

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Engineering, or related field
  • 2–3 years of experience in product management, project coordination, business analysis, marketing, engineering, or related roles
  • Strong financial and analytical skills with the ability to interpret and present data effectively
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and follow-through
  • Passion for consumer products and product excellence

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in hard goods, outdoor, consumer products, tools, sporting goods, or technical products
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Operations, Sales, or Marketing teams
  • Familiarity with pricing analysis, forecasting, margin analysis, or business case development
  • Comfort leveraging emerging technologies and AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency and analysis

Why Leatherman

At Leatherman, you’ll work alongside passionate people building products with purpose. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully, grow quickly, and help shape the future of an iconic global brand.

We offer:

  • Competitive compensation and bonus opportunities
  • Comprehensive health benefits
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off
  • On-site fitness center and health clinic
  • Employee discounts
  • Career growth and development opportunities
  • A collaborative and innovative culture rooted in craftsmanship and continuous improvement

Location

This role is based onsite at Leatherman Tool Group headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

Ready to Build What’s Next?

If you’re energized by products, consumers, strategy, and innovation — and you’re ready to grow into a future product leader — we’d love to hear from you.
