PURPOSE:

We are seeking a Lab Coordinator to manage the daily operations of our Biology and Chemistry teaching laboratories. In this role, you will oversee lab equipment and supply maintenance, assist faculty and students in setting up experiments, and ensure compliance with safety protocols. The Lab Coordinator will also handle inventory management and support administrative tasks such as preparing reports and coordinating lab-related activities and events. If the successful candidate holds a Master's degree, there may be an opportunity for instruction as well. Ideal candidates should have strong organizational skills, a solid understanding of laboratory operations, and a commitment to maintaining a safe and efficient

learning environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lab Setup and Maintenance: Prepare and set up laboratory experiments, ensuring that all equipment and materials are available and functional before classes begin.
  • Inventory Management: Maintain an accurate inventory of laboratory supplies, chemicals, and equipment. Place orders as needed to ensure laboratories are fully stocked.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure all laboratory practices comply with institutional, state, and federal safety regulations, including the handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Oversee the cleaning, calibration, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments. Arrange for repairs or replacements as needed.
  • Student and Faculty Support: Assist students during lab sessions with the proper use of equipment and safe laboratory practices. Provide instructional support to faculty as needed for lab courses.
  • Training: Train students and teaching assistants on safety protocols, lab equipment uses, and proper procedures for experiments.
  • Documentation and Recordkeeping: Maintain records of laboratory usage, inventory, and chemical storage. Ensure all safety documents (SDS) are updated and accessible.
  • Supervision: Supervise student assistants or work-study students who help with lab preparations and cleanup.
  • Teach introductory labs for biology or chemistry and labs for non-majors (Master's degree)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a closely related field is required. A Master's degree in a relevant discipline is preferred and may allow for additional responsibilities such as instructing lab sessions.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a laboratory setting, particularly in an academic environment, is highly desirable. Experience with laboratory management, inventory control, and safety protocols is a plus.
  • Technical Skills: Familiarity with standard laboratory equipment, techniques, and procedures used in both biology and chemistry labs. Knowledge of proper safety protocols and hazard management.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with faculty, students, and staff.
  • Organizational Skills: Excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize responsibilities, and maintain accurate records.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work independently as well as collaborate effectively with faculty, students, and other staff members.

HOURS: Eight (8) hours per day, Monday - Friday 40 hours a week. Additional hours worked as needed.
