What are some common challenges faced by learning experience designers when collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs)?

Learning Experience Designers often work closely with subject matter experts to create effective educational content. A common challenge is translating complex or technical information from SMEs into engaging and accessible learning materials for diverse audiences. There can also be differences in expectations or communication styles, requiring strong interpersonal and project management skills to align goals and timelines. Building mutual understanding and maintaining clear, ongoing communication are key strategies for overcoming these challenges and ensuring a successful collaboration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a learning experience designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Learning Experience Designer, you need expertise in instructional design principles, adult learning theories, and often a degree in education, instructional design, or a related field. Familiarity with e-learning authoring tools (such as Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate), Learning Management Systems (LMS), and multimedia production is essential. Creativity, collaboration, and strong communication skills help you design engaging, learner-centered experiences that address diverse needs. These skills are vital to creating effective and impactful educational solutions that drive learner engagement and knowledge retention.

What is the difference between Learning Experience Design vs Instructional Design?

Learning Experience Design focuses on creating engaging, learner-centered experiences using design and user experience principles, often in digital environments. Instructional Design emphasizes developing structured educational content and courses, typically with a focus on curriculum and assessment. While both roles overlap in education and training, Learning Experience Design prioritizes the overall learner journey and engagement, whereas Instructional Design concentrates on content structure and delivery.

What is learning experience design?

Learning Experience Design (LXD) is an approach that focuses on creating engaging, effective, and learner-centered educational experiences. Unlike traditional instructional design, LXD considers the entire journey of the learner, including motivation, context, and usability. Learning Experience Designers use principles from education, psychology, and design to craft courses, programs, or digital tools that promote meaningful learning outcomes. Their work often involves collaboration with subject matter experts, educators, and technologists to ensure learning solutions are both effective and enjoyable.

Job description

We're seeking an exceptional UX Designer, a strategic thinker with a sharp focus on visual design and brand expression - someone who can turn complex requirements into simple, elegant, scalable frameworks for digital experiences. If you thrive at the intersection of brand strategy and design systems, with a keen eye for typography, motion, and visual language, this is your chance to shape high-quality design adoption across the firm.

As a UX Designer in Digital Channels, you will define and evolve the design system frameworks that guide how the Chase and JPMorgan brands come to life across app and web. You'll create the visual design language, UX patterns and design system guidelines that enable teams across the firm to deliver consistent, high-quality design at scale. Create solutions to complex challenges, consult and advise designers and product teams on principles and system application, and help raise the bar through critiques and peer reviews.

Job responsibilities

  • Drive the application and evolution of the Chase and J.P. Morgan brands in digital products through UI exploration, visual brand identity, design language, motion graphics and more.

  • Deliver design frameworks and documentation (design system elements, UI patterns, brand expression across platforms) and refine them through critique.

  • Iterate with strong critical thinking, using design reviews to improve quality, clarity, and adoption. Consult and advise on Product Design Principles, Design Language and Design System application as designers across the firm leverage our frameworks, guidelines and assets.

  • Apply expertise in brand architecture and design systems (information architecture, pattern libraries, visual libraries)

  • Define design processes and produce artifacts that support team goals and enable vertical teams.

  • Champion customer experience by proactively incorporating user needs and feedback into daily work.

  • Elevate team performance and product quality by surfacing risks/issues to senior design leadership and fostering continuous learning across the team.

Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience

  • 5+ years' experience as a visual and/or product designer, with strong mobile and web delivery.

  • Expert-level Figma proficiency, including experience with component libraries and scalable system workflows.

  • Exceptional visual design craft, demonstrated through sophisticated layout, typography, and UI composition on mobile and web.

  • Deep understanding of UX, UI, and design systems, with the ability to create and maintain frameworks that drive consistency at scale.

  • Proven brand expression capability-translating brand and marketing strategy into product design language, patterns, and standards across platforms.

  • Strong communication, strategy, system-thinking and execution: can concept, document, and distill logic to evolve design language.

Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Curiosity-driven exploration of AI in design-actively experiments with generative and assistive AI to accelerate ideation, and system exploration while maintaining brand integrity.

  • Ability to translate concepts and learnings into scalable practice-documents guidelines and repeatable workflows so teams can adopt design methods consistently within the design system.

  • Strong exploratory prototyping-uses rapid iteration to test concepts, motion, and interaction patterns across app and web before standardizing them.

  • Thoughtful governance and standards awareness-partners with product, engineering, and data stakeholders to ensure design frameworks align with responsible use, quality, and compliance expectations.
