What is learning experience design?

Learning Experience Design (LXD) is an approach that focuses on creating engaging, effective, and learner-centered educational experiences. Unlike traditional instructional design, LXD considers the entire journey of the learner, including motivation, context, and usability. Learning Experience Designers use principles from education, psychology, and design to craft courses, programs, or digital tools that promote meaningful learning outcomes. Their work often involves collaboration with subject matter experts, educators, and technologists to ensure learning solutions are both effective and enjoyable.

What are some common challenges faced by learning experience designers when collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs)?

Learning Experience Designers often work closely with subject matter experts to create effective educational content. A common challenge is translating complex or technical information from SMEs into engaging and accessible learning materials for diverse audiences. There can also be differences in expectations or communication styles, requiring strong interpersonal and project management skills to align goals and timelines. Building mutual understanding and maintaining clear, ongoing communication are key strategies for overcoming these challenges and ensuring a successful collaboration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a learning experience designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Learning Experience Designer, you need expertise in instructional design principles, adult learning theories, and often a degree in education, instructional design, or a related field. Familiarity with e-learning authoring tools (such as Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate), Learning Management Systems (LMS), and multimedia production is essential. Creativity, collaboration, and strong communication skills help you design engaging, learner-centered experiences that address diverse needs. These skills are vital to creating effective and impactful educational solutions that drive learner engagement and knowledge retention.

What is the difference between Learning Experience Design vs Instructional Design?

AspectLearning Experience DesignInstructional Design

SkillsUser experience, multimedia, storytellingCurriculum development, assessment, content structuring
Work EnvironmentDigital platforms, e-learning, corporate trainingClassroom, online courses, training programs
CertificationsOften includes UX or design certificationsOften includes instructional design or education certifications

Learning Experience Design focuses on creating engaging, learner-centered experiences using design and user experience principles, often in digital environments. Instructional Design emphasizes developing structured educational content and courses, typically with a focus on curriculum and assessment. While both roles overlap in education and training, Learning Experience Design prioritizes the overall learner journey and engagement, whereas Instructional Design concentrates on content structure and delivery.

Job description

Job Requisition ID: 94291
Location Designation: Hybrid - 3 days per week
Role Overview:
We are looking for a Learning Experience Designer who goes beyond traditional instructional design to create engaging, modern, and performance-driven learning experiences. This role requires a strong blend of design thinking, business acumen, and hands-on experience leveraging AI tools to design, develop, and scale high-impact learning solutions.
This individual will design end-to-end learning experiences that support agent success and management effectiveness, using a mix of digital, live, and experiential modalities. The ideal candidate is both creative and strategic, capable of transforming complex business needs into intuitive, engaging, and measurable learning journeys.
What You'll Do:
  • Design and develop end-to-end learning experiences (not just courses) aligned to business outcomes and learner needs
  • Apply human-centered design and design thinking methodologies to create impactful, learner-centric solutions
  • Leverage AI tools (e.g., generative AI, content automation tools, adaptive learning platforms) to accelerate development and enhance personalization
  • Create innovative learning assets including:
    • AI-assisted eLearning modules
    • Scenario-based simulations and branching experiences
    • Interactive videos and microlearning
    • Performance support tools (job aids, infographics, playbooks)
    • Facilitator guides and learner toolkits
  • Design blended learning journeys that integrate:
    • Self-paced digital learning
    • Virtual instructor-led sessions
    • In-person workshops
    • Social and cohort-based learning experiences
  • Partner with SMEs and stakeholders to translate business needs into engaging learning strategies
  • Rapidly prototype and iterate learning solutions using AI-supported design workflows
  • Conduct quality assurance, usability testing, and continuous improvement of learning experiences prior to launch

What You'll Bring:
  • 5+ years of experience in learning experience design, instructional design, or related field
  • Proven ability to design across multiple modalities and formats (digital, live, experiential)
  • Demonstrated experience using AI tools to create or enhance learning assets (e.g., content generation, video creation, simulations, personalization)
  • Strong portfolio showcasing innovative, engaging learning experiences (not just slide-based training)
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into clear, compelling, and actionable learning experiences
  • Experience designing for sales, leadership development, or performance-based roles (insurance/financial services experience preferred)
  • Proficiency with learning technologies such as Articulate Storyline, Rise, Scribe, HeyGen, Premier, and other modern authoring tools and technologies
  • Advanced skills in PowerPoint and content design tools; familiarity with multimedia and video tools is a plus
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams

What Sets You Apart
  • Experience designing AI-driven or adaptive learning experiences
  • Ability to think beyond courses and design holistic learning ecosystems
  • Strong storytelling and narrative design skills
  • Curiosity and willingness to experiment with emerging technologies and learning trends
