Position Type: Teacher (1.0 FTE)
Location: Minnesota Valley Area Learning Center located in Montevideo, MN
Workday/Year:  Monday-Friday; 7:45am-3:45pm
Duty Days: 187 (approximately)

About the Minnesota Valley Area Learning Center

The Minnesota Valley Area Learning Center (MVALC) in Montevideo, MN, serves students in grades 6-12 who benefit from unique and/or alternative programming. Using an instructional model grounded in firm, fair, and consistent practices, with an emphasis on accountability, connection, and real-world readiness, the MVALC seat-based program serves 40 to 75 students in a structured, relationship-based, non-traditional setting. Approximately 25% of students in this program receive special education services.  Focused on building strong student relationships, foundational learning and instruction that focuses on the needs of students, MVALC staff are dedicated to helping all of our students succeed in a learning environment that is structured, consistent and designed to meet the needs of students who benefit from alternative approaches. The MVALC is a part of the Minnesota River Valley Education District (MRVED).

Job Summary: 

The Minnesota Valley Area Learning Center (MVALC) is seeking a Special Education Teacher to become part of a community of educators, committed to changing the lives and opportunities of our students. 

Working with a dedicated and collaborative teaching team, the special education teacher works with students in the MVALC seat-based program who qualify for SPED services by providing direct instruction, case management, resource support and collaborative teacher planning. 

Responsibilities for the position include:

  •  managing a Special Education services caseload
  • ensuring student needs are met per their Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
  • maintaining all due process compliance including IEPs/evaluation reports
  • providing specialized instruction for qualifying student that supports their IEPs.

Required Qualifications: 

The candidate selected for this position will have:

  • Valid Minnesota teaching license in Special Education (ABS, ASD, EBD, or related area)
  • Experience working with middle and/or high school students preferred
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families
  • Knowledge of special education due process and compliance systems (SpEd Forms)
  • Strong understanding of IEP development, progress monitoring, and documentation
  • Willingness to obtain Work Based Learning (WBL) endorsement

Position Overview:

This position does not align with a traditional, full-day, resource room model.The MVALC SPED teacher serves in a blended role, including:

  • Special education case management and service delivery
    • Caseload & Support is typically 10-15 student. Within our small ALC setting, these caseloads are intentionally managed, allowing staff to build strong relationships while maintaining high-quality services and compliance.
    • General education instruction in:
      • Adult Living Skills
      • Social Skills
      • Work-Based Learning (integrated throughout programming to support post-secondary transition)
    • Collaborative team planning to ensure students are supported academically, socially, and emotionally in their learning.
