Job Summary
The Student Support Specialist for Tutoring Services is a full-time professional staff position who is responsible for managing student staff and assisting with the day-to-day operations of tutoring, which is an academic skills-building program designed to help students succeed at Lamar University. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Academic Support and collaborates extensively within the Center for Academic Success, as well as across campus with academic and student service departments, faculty, and staff.
Essential Job Functions
  • Hire, train, and supervise tutoring staff utilizing College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) guidelines and standards. Staff includes peer tutors, SI leaders, and embedded tutors.
  • Assist the Assistant Director with developing, implementing, and managing tutoring programs.
  • Create and oversee schedules and sessions for peer tutors.
  • Provide tutoring, academic support workshops, and presentations.
  • Participating in professional development, tutoring, and student success research.
  • Assist with assessing, evaluating, and growing programs, advancing partnerships with multiple departments and individuals across campus, and assisting with marketing and promoting services.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • One year of relevant experience.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working in academic support in higher education.
    Experience supervising student staff.
    Knowledge of the university educational system and student retention.
