Department Office of Teaching & Learning (OTL)

Compensation $62,000.00 to Negotiable

Annual General Description / Primary Purpose The Learning Designer in the Office of Teaching and Learning provides instructional consultation and develops and facilitates faculty professional development across disciplines and instructional modalities. The position works with faculty, departments, and faculty groups to identify teaching and learning challenges and apply evidence-based strategies that strengthen teaching practice, student engagement, learning, and persistence. This is an on-campus position.

Job Function Design, coordinate, and facilitate workshops, institutes, book clubs, faculty learning communities, and other professional learning opportunities related to effective teaching and student success. Provide confidential, individualized consultation to faculty on instructional strategies, course organization, assessment, student engagement, and other teaching and learning concerns. Work with individual faculty members, departments, and faculty groups to identify instructional challenges, recommend practical, evidence-based strategies, and assess the effectiveness of instructional changes. Conduct voluntary, confidential, and formative classroom observations and mid-semester feedback activities to support instructional improvement. Review instructional materials and advise faculty on course organization and the effective use of Canvas and other instructional technologies to support clarity, engagement, accessibility, and student learning. Develop practical guides, training materials, consultation tools, and other faculty resources. Contribute to professional learning for new faculty, adjunct faculty, graduate teaching assistants, and other instructional personnel. Collaborate with OTL colleagues, academic units, and campus partners to identify teaching needs and coordinate appropriate programming and support. Assess faculty-development programs and services and maintain current knowledge of research and emerging practices relevant to higher education. Other duties as assigned. During declared campus emergencies, this position may be required to perform specific job-related duties at a designated off-campus location or place of residence.

Core Competencies

Experience teaching and applying evidence-based teaching practices, adult learning principles, learning sciences, and instructional strategies in higher education or another adult-learning setting. Experience designing and facilitating engaging professional development in in-person and virtual settings. Ability to analyze teaching and learning challenges and provide practical, context-sensitive guidance. Ability to establish trust and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and campus partners. Excellent consultation, facilitation, presentation, interpersonal, written communication, and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple consultations, programs, and projects while meeting deadlines. Familiarity with learning management systems, preferably Canvas, and other instructional technologies used in higher education. Knowledge of accessibility and inclusive teaching practices.

Supervision Received

General supervision. The incumbent independently manages a variety of complex responsibilities within established guidelines, exercises professional judgment while work is in process, and receives direction on new assignments and institutional priorities.

Required Qualifications

Master's or Bachelor's degree and 2+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

A master's degree in education, instructional design, curriculum and instruction, educational technology, higher education, faculty development, or a related field; college or university teaching experience; experience providing instructional consultation or professional development to higher education faculty; and experience conducting formative classroom observations or providing structured feedback on teaching.
