What are Learning Assistants?

Learning Assistants are individuals who support students and instructors in educational settings, often in classrooms or labs. They help facilitate group activities, answer student questions, and provide additional guidance to enhance learning. Learning Assistants are typically undergraduate students trained to use active learning techniques to improve student engagement and understanding. Their role is to create a positive and supportive learning environment, working alongside faculty to help students succeed.

What are the duties of a learning assistant?

A learning assistant supports students by facilitating discussions, helping with assignments, and clarifying concepts under the supervision of instructors. They often assist in creating a positive learning environment and may use tools like educational software or learning management systems. Their duties focus on enhancing student understanding and engagement in the classroom or online settings.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

While both roles assist in educational environments, Learning Assistants emphasize peer-led support, whereas Teaching Assistants often work directly under faculty supervision to facilitate instruction.

How do Learning Assistants typically collaborate with teachers and students in the classroom?

Learning Assistants work closely with teachers to support lesson delivery, often helping to facilitate group activities, provide one-on-one assistance to students, and manage classroom dynamics. They play a key role in reinforcing concepts presented by the teacher, answering student questions, and identifying individuals who may need additional help. Collaboration also involves regular communication with the teaching staff to discuss student progress and adjust instructional strategies as needed. This teamwork ensures a supportive and effective learning environment for all students.

How much do learning assistants get paid?

Learning assistants typically earn between $10 and $20 per hour, depending on the institution, location, and their experience. Many positions are part-time and may include training in educational tools and student support techniques.

They may assist with tutoring, classroom activities, or providing feedback, and typically work under the supervision of instructors or faculty members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Learning Assistant, and why are they important?

Job description

The Opportunity

Are you looking for a caring, collaborative, values-driven workplace with inspiring teammates and leaders? Do you have the ambition and desire to be the best and thrive at the most impactful global insurance provider in the world? Look no further than Zurich Canada.

If you have experience in Learning and Development, Talent Development, instructional design, learning technology or digital learning and are looking for a role where you can help build practical, scalable learning experiences, we would love to hear from you.

Zurich Canada is currently seeking an experienced Learning Experience & Technology Lead to help design, deploy, and manage modern, scalable, and high-impact learning solutions at an enterprise level while supporting embedded L&D partners within business units to drive impact throughout the organization.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President (AVP), Enterprise Learning, you will help advance enterprise-wide learning priorities as well as business-specific capability needs, working closely with technical L&D partners, HR partners, and other stakeholders to execute learning plans, enable business results and strengthen the employee learning experience.

This is a unique opportunity to leverage your knowledge and expertise to contribute to the continued evolution of learning at Zurich Canada. In this newly created role, you will help establish learning pathways, digital learning experiences, program supports, templates, standards and reporting practices that enable employee development, capability building, and future skills readiness. You will also have the opportunity to continue your own growth in a supportive environment where your voice matters.

Zurich Canada uses artificial intelligence-enabled tools to support certain aspects of the recruitment process, including the initial review and screening of applications. Artificial intelligence is not the sole basis for candidate shortlisting or selection. All hiring decisions are reviewed and made by qualified hiring professionals.

Zurich follows a hybrid work model requiring three days per week of in-person presence, which may include time in the office or market-facing engagements.

What you will do:

Learning Design, Architecture, & Experience

  • Support the design of enterprise learning solutions, pathways, and curricula that translate business capability needs and enterprise priorities into practical, structured learning journeys.
  • Create templates, job aids, frameworks, and standards that support consistent design across Zurich Canada's learning portfolio.
  • Support the development of role-specific, skills-based and career-relevant learning pathways for business units and enterprise capability areas.
  • Design and curate end-to-end learner experiences across enterprise sites and platforms, ensuring solutions reflect adult learning principles, practical on-the-job application, accessibility, user experience, and business relevance.

Digital Learning and Platforms Enablement

  • Lead the effective use of Zurich Canada's LMS and related learning technologies in support of learning and business strategies.
  • Support tagging, organization, presentation and governance of learning assets to align with business and employee capability needs and skill-based development.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to improve learning experiences, platforms, and technologies to support employee capability development, user engagement, and reporting.
  • Explore emerging learning technologies, including AI-enabled tools, to improve learning design, personalization, efficiency, and user experience where appropriate.

Technical L&D Team Enablement

  • Advise, consult, and collaborate with L&D business partners to turn business needs into practical, scalable learning solutions.
  • Provide design guidance, templates, and LMS platform support to technical or function-specific learning teams where relevant.
  • Support use and re-use of enterprise assets to reduce silos, improve consistency, and avoid duplication across business units.
  • Support enterprise integration between Learning & Development, Talent Management, and Talent Acquisition and business partners by helping create plans, pathways, and structures that reinforce development, mobility, and future skills readiness.

Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Establish practical measurement and reporting metrics for learning programs, pathways, platforms, and learner engagement.
  • Analyze adoption, completion, progression, engagement, utility, feedback and other learner behaviors to improve learning design and platform experiences.
  • Develop dashboards, reports or simplified reporting mechanisms that provide useful insight to L&D, HR, and business stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, simplify or improve experiences, and enhance value for learners and the business.
What you bring to the table:
  • 6+ years of experience in Learning & Development, Organizational Development (OD), Talent Development, digital learning, learning technology, or a related field.
  • Strong background in instructional or curriculum design, program management, and experience building role-based learning journeys, leadership and capability programs, and blended learning experiences.
  • Hands-on experience implementing or managing Learning Management or Learning Experience Platforms (LMS/LXP), ideally with exposure to skills-based platforms, including experience establishing digital ecosystems, building learning paths, structuring and tagging content, and reporting on platform and learner metrics.
  • Experience partnering and collaborating with business leaders, HRBPs, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), Talent teams, technical learning partners, or other cross-functional stakeholders to deliver learning experiences that positively impact employee engagement, performance, and business outcomes.
  • Experience providing L&D, HR, or OD consulting and advisory services within a business environment to diagnose needs, uncover root causes, and create innovative learning solutions and performance support tools.
  • Strong project and program management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, stakeholders, deliverables, and timelines.
  • Bachelor's and/or master's degree(s) in Human Resources, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Adult Education, Business Administration, Educational Technologies, or other related qualifications or certifications.

Preferred skills or qualifications:

  • Strong learning design and curriculum architecture expertise
  • Ability to design end-to-end learning journeys
  • Strong understanding of learner experience, accessibility, and user-centered design
  • Advanced communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on decision making and execution
  • Strong creative and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced skills with AI tools and eLearning authoring tools
  • French language competency is an asset
  • Experience with dashboards, data visualization tools, Power Automate or BI are an asset
