What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lean Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lean Engineer, a strong background in industrial engineering, process improvement, and Lean manufacturing principles is essential, often supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with tools like Six Sigma, Kaizen, value stream mapping, and Lean certification (such as Lean Six Sigma Green Belt) is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to lead cross-functional teams stand out as vital soft skills. These competencies drive operational efficiency, cost savings, and continuous improvement within manufacturing or production environments.

What is Lean Engineering?

Lean Engineering is an approach to engineering that focuses on maximizing value while minimizing waste throughout the design, development, and manufacturing processes. It applies Lean principles—originally developed in manufacturing—to engineering workflows, aiming to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance product quality. Lean Engineering encourages continuous improvement, collaboration, and the elimination of non-value-added activities. This methodology is widely used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and technology to streamline product development and accelerate time-to-market.

How does a Lean Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement process improvements?

Lean Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams—including production, quality, supply chain, and management—to identify inefficiencies and implement process enhancements. They facilitate workshops such as Kaizen events, gather input from team members at all levels, and use data-driven approaches to develop sustainable solutions. Effective communication and stakeholder engagement are crucial, as Lean Engineers must ensure that changes are practical and embraced by all involved. This collaborative environment not only fosters innovation but also accelerates the adoption of best practices across the organization.

What is the difference between Lean Engineering vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectLean EngineeringMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering, certifications in Lean or Six SigmaBachelor's or master's in mechanical engineering, professional licensure often preferred
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, process improvement, product developmentDesign, testing, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems
Industry UsageManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, process industriesAutomotive, aerospace, robotics, energy sectors

Lean Engineering focuses on optimizing processes and reducing waste through methodologies like Lean and Six Sigma, often working across various manufacturing and process environments. Mechanical Engineers design and develop mechanical systems, focusing on product development, testing, and maintenance. While both roles require engineering credentials, Lean Engineering emphasizes process improvement skills, whereas Mechanical Engineering centers on mechanical design and analysis.

Senior Product Manager

$145K - $175K/yr

Full-time

Job description

Introduction:

Visium Resources has an exciting full-time opportunity for a Senior Product Manager to lead the end-to-end product lifecycle in a dynamic, fast-growing startup environment. This highly autonomous role serves as the voice of the customer, translating user needs into product strategy while aligning executive vision with engineering execution. As the initial member of the product team, you will take full ownership of product management responsibilities, driving product direction, prioritization, and successful delivery in a lean, fast-paced, shipping-focused culture.

This position requires an initiative-taking leader who thrives with ownership, makes data-driven decisions, and is enthusiastic about building exceptional products. Candidates must be U.S. Citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents.

Annual salary range: $145,000–$175,000, plus benefits

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct deep-dive interviews and research with brokers, haulers, and contractors to uncover core pain points and utterly understand their "WHY".
  • Own the product backlog entirely, writing clear, actionable epics and requirements so the engineering team can focus strictly on execution.
  • Function as the definitive voice of the customer, successfully relieving the CTO, COO, VP of Engineering, and Head of Software Operations from daily tactical requirements gathering.
  • Leverage your strong UI/UX sensibilities and firsthand experience with design tools to create wireframes and mockups that guide engineering discussions and validate concepts with users before development.
  • Maintain a data-driven approach to product development, utilizing feature analytics to analyze user behavior, measure success, and make strategic prioritization decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers to ensure proposed solutions are highly feasible within our Node.js and Firebase stack while aligning with our lean engineering philosophy.
  • Define and optimize critical fintech workflows-specifically involving payment gateways, escrow logic, or complex financial workflows-to ensure seamless payment experiences for our users.
  • Continuously analyze the market and our competitors to ensure company's feature set remains two steps ahead while executing our 5-year growth strategy
  • Leverage generative AI tools to accelerate daily product responsibilities, including generating feature suggestions, streamlining customer research synthesis, and utilizing AI-assisted design/wireframing platforms.

Required experience/skills:

  • Product Management Experience: 4+ years of professional product management experience, ideally with a proven record in a fast-paced environment or startup culture.
  • Targeted Environments: Background or strong preference for experience within B2B SaaS or construction logistics.
  • Extreme Autonomy: Ability to take initiative and thrive independently as the sole product team member handling all initial responsibilities.
  • Design Tool Competency: Practical, firsthand experience using design tools (such as Figma, Balsamiq, Sketch, or modern AI design tools) to build wireframes and mockups; the general experience with design tools is valued over a specific platform.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical capabilities with a deeply data-driven approach to product development.

Additional experience (preferred):

  • Direct experience in the construction, short-haul trucking, or logistics industries, with an emphasis on platforms dealing with truck routing and fleet dispatch.
  • Experience utilizing Amplitude for feature analytics, as well as familiarity with BI data analysis tools like BigQuery, Data Studio, or similar platforms.
  • A foundational understanding of Firebase or serverless    cloud architectures to better comprehend our technical constraints.
  • An active interest in or exposure to Artificial Intelligence, specifically regarding how it can be pragmatically applied to improve user experiences without over-complicating the underlying technical stack.
