What is a lean engineer?

Lean Engineers are professionals who specialize in improving processes, reducing waste, and increasing efficiency within organizations, often in manufacturing or production environments. They apply Lean principles and methodologies, such as value stream mapping and continuous improvement (Kaizen), to streamline operations and enhance productivity. Lean Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams to identify inefficiencies, implement solutions, and sustain improvements over time. Their ultimate goal is to deliver higher value to customers while minimizing resources and costs.

How much do lean engineers make?

Lean engineers typically earn a median annual salary of around $70,000 to $90,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Professionals with certifications like Lean Six Sigma and experience with process improvement tools may command higher salaries.

What are some common challenges lean engineers face when implementing process improvements, and how can they overcome them?

Lean Engineers often encounter resistance to change from team members who are accustomed to existing processes. Additionally, they may face difficulties in sustaining improvements over time or dealing with limited resources. To overcome these challenges, it's important to engage stakeholders early, clearly communicate the benefits of Lean initiatives, and provide ongoing training. Building cross-functional teams and establishing regular check-ins can also help ensure that improvements are maintained and adapted as needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lean engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lean Engineer, you need a strong background in industrial, manufacturing, or process engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and experience with continuous improvement methodologies. Familiarity with Lean tools such as Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen, Six Sigma, and statistical analysis software is typically required, with certifications like Lean Six Sigma being highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help Lean Engineers drive change and engage stakeholders. These skills are crucial for identifying inefficiencies, implementing sustainable improvements, and enhancing overall operational performance.

Job description

Senior Product Engineer

New York City (On-site)

$250,000 - $350,000 (Negotiable) + Equity

We're partnering with a well-funded, high-growth technology company building the next generation of AI-powered developer tools. Following significant recent funding and exceptional commercial growth, they're looking for an experienced Senior Product Engineer to help build entirely new products from the ground up.

This isn't a role maintaining legacy systems or delivering features from an established roadmap. You'll work directly with the founders to take products from initial concept through architecture, development, launch, and customer adoption.

The Opportunity

You'll own products end-to-end, making key technical and product decisions while working in a small, exceptionally talented engineering team. The business is expanding beyond its existing platform into AI-powered coding agents, developer workflows, and intelligent debugging tools, giving you the opportunity to shape products that thousands of engineers will use every day.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Own products from ideation through to production and ongoing iteration.
  • Design and build full-stack applications with a strong focus on product quality and user experience.
  • Work directly with founders to define product strategy and technical direction.
  • Make critical systems design and architecture decisions.
  • Prototype and launch AI-powered features at speed.
  • Build developer-facing products used by engineering teams worldwide.

About You

You'll likely have:

  • 5+ years' experience building and shipping full-stack products.
  • A track record of taking products from 0→1 in startup or high-growth environments.
  • Strong React and modern frontend development experience alongside backend expertise.
  • Experience owning products rather than simply delivering tickets.
  • Excellent systems design and architecture skills.
  • Experience building developer tools, APIs, SDKs or engineer-facing products is highly desirable.
  • Exposure to AI products, coding agents or applied AI is a bonus.

Why Join?

  • Build entirely new AI products rather than iterating on existing ones.
  • Join a company with exceptional commercial momentum and significant recent funding.
  • Work in a lean engineering team where every individual has meaningful impact.
  • Collaborate directly with experienced founders and influence the technical direction of the business.
  • Competitive compensation package including a base salary plus equity.
  • Opportunity to shape products used by thousands of engineering teams.

If you're excited by building category-defining products, enjoy ambiguity, and thrive in fast-moving startup environments, we'd love to hear from you.
