Job description

At IEM, we're not just building innovative electrical distribution systems, we're shaping the future. IEM is dedicated to delivering world-class solutions for complex power needs. After 75 years, we continue to push the boundaries of what's possible. Whether you're an experienced professional or just starting out, you'll have the opportunity to contribute, grow, and make a lasting impact on industries that power the world's most dynamic markets.
Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineering Lead is responsible for driving the mechanical design and engineering effort across customer programs, with a strong focus on hyperscaler data center infrastructure. This role owns the technical review of customer requirements, engineering drawings, plans, and specifications, and leads cross-functional design reviews with Sales, Manufacturing, and end users to ensure designs are accurate, manufacturable, and aligned with customer intent. The ideal candidate brings deep experience with hyperscale data center builds, including power skids and e-houses, and is comfortable acting as the technical authority across the full project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
  • Review and interpret customer requirements, engineering drawings, plans, and specifications to ensure mechanical designs meet contractual and technical intent.
  • Lead cross-functional design reviews, coordinating input and alignment from Sales, Manufacturing, and end-user stakeholders.
  • Serve as the primary mechanical engineering point of contact for hyperscaler data center build programs, including skid and e-house mechanical systems (structural, HVAC, cooling, piping, enclosures).
  • Develop, review, and approve mechanical layouts, structural designs, enclosure designs, and equipment arrangement drawings.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards (ASME, ASHRAE, IBC, NEMA), and customer-specific technical requirements.
  • Partner with Manufacturing to resolve constructability issues and support design-for-manufacturability initiatives.
  • Support Sales and proposal teams with technical scoping, cost estimation input, and risk identification during the bid phase.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and mid-level mechanical engineers.
  • Travel to customer sites, manufacturing facilities, and project locations as needed (up to 30%) to support design reviews, site walks, and commissioning support.
  • Identify and drive resolution of technical issues arising during design, fabrication, and field deployment.
  • Maintain and improve internal design standards, templates, and best practices for mechanical engineering deliverables.

Qualifications
  • 15+ years of applicable mechanical engineering experience, including significant experience in a lead or senior technical role.
  • Demonstrated experience with hyperscaler data center builds, specifically involving power skids and e-houses.
  • Strong working knowledge of mechanical systems relevant to modular/prefabricated equipment, including structural design, cooling/HVAC, and enclosure design.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional design reviews with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting customer specifications, drawings, and contractual technical requirements.
  • Strong understanding of applicable mechanical codes and industry standards (ASME, ASHRAE, IBC, NEMA, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical detail for non-technical stakeholders (e.g., Sales).
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 30%.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (or equivalent applicable experience).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience with modular/prefabricated equipment design and manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with data center commissioning processes and documentation.
  • Experience with 3D modeling and structural analysis software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, ANSYS).
