What are Lead Database Engineers?

Lead Database Engineers are senior professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining complex database systems within an organization. They oversee database architecture, ensure data security and integrity, and manage a team of database engineers or administrators. Their role often includes optimizing performance, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with other IT departments to support business needs. Lead Database Engineers also play a key part in setting best practices and ensuring compliance with data regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lead Database Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lead Database Engineer, you need deep expertise in database architecture, data modeling, performance tuning, and a strong background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with major database management systems (such as Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server, or PostgreSQL), cloud platforms, and certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator are highly valuable. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help drive team success and stakeholder collaboration. Job description

Lead Data Engineer (MongoDB)

6+ months – likely to extend

Hybrid Schedule (3 days onsite/2 days remote)

Charlotte, NC / Irving, TX

Requirements:

  • 7+ years experience as a database engineer, with at least 2 years as a lead
  • Expert-level SQL with extensive experience building, designing, and documenting database solutions
  • Hands-on MongoDB experience (2–3+ years) with proven ability to design and support Mongo-backed applications
  • Strong CI/CD background using tools such as Jenkins, Liquibase, GitHub, and enterprise deployment pipelines.

Project Details:

  • Build and maintain SQL and MongoDB solutions for real-time data reporting, Kafka-driven integrations, and new enterprise initiatives.
  • Develop ETL pipelines (SSIS, Autosys/scheduling tools) and contribute to Agile/Scrum ceremonies, including writing user stories.
  • Lead database engineering efforts focused on automation, data modeling, performance optimization, and frontline production support for mission-critical systems.

Job Description:

  • This Lead Database Engineer role sits within the CTO Data & Analytics team and is a true development-focused position—not support or maintenance. The engineer will spearhead the design, modeling, coding, and deployment of SQL and MongoDB solutions, ensuring high-quality data engineering practices across the environment. With a heavy emphasis on automation and enterprise-grade CI/CD, the role requires strong technical leadership and the ability to articulate engineering decisions clearly. Candidates will join a fast-moving team responsible for frontline database work, new real-time data initiatives, and a multi-year backlog of SQL and Mongo development needs. This is a 5‑month contract based in Irving or Charlotte, with a strong likelihood of extension.
