What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Layout Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Layout Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering or a related field, along with expertise in CMOS technology and semiconductor design principles. Proficiency with EDA tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, Mentor Graphics, and knowledge of DRC/LVS checks is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure accurate and efficient circuit layouts, which are critical for the performance and manufacturability of microelectronic devices.

What are some common challenges faced by Layout Engineers when collaborating with design and verification teams?

Layout Engineers often work closely with design and verification teams to ensure that integrated circuit layouts meet design specifications and manufacturability requirements. A common challenge is balancing the need for optimal performance with physical constraints like area, power, and routing limitations. Effective communication and iterative feedback are crucial, as changes in one team's work can impact another's. Staying organized and being proactive in addressing design rule violations or timing issues can help facilitate smoother collaboration and project success.

What is the difference between Layout Engineer vs PCB Design Engineer?

AspectLayout EngineerPCB Design Engineer

While both roles involve electronic design, a Layout Engineer focuses on physical placement and routing of integrated circuits or chips, whereas a PCB Design Engineer specializes in designing printed circuit boards for electronic devices. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in related industries, but their specific focus areas differ significantly.

What are layout engineers?

Layout engineers are professionals who design and create the physical layout of integrated circuits (ICs) and electronic components on semiconductor chips. They translate circuit schematics into precise geometric representations that can be manufactured on silicon wafers, ensuring that the layout meets design specifications for performance, reliability, and manufacturability. Layout engineers work closely with circuit designers and use specialized software tools to optimize the placement and routing of components. Their work is essential for producing functional, efficient, and cost-effective microchips used in various electronic devices.

Job description

WHO WE ARE:

At Harvey Performance Company, we're more than a team; we're a community. Our thriving, dynamic, and rapidly expanding organization values community, celebrates success, and fosters personal and professional growth opportunities.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

We’re adding our first Manufacturing Engineer at our Cuyahoga Falls site to support a growing pipeline of engineering work and bring more dedicated focus to it.

There are a number of active and planned projects in place, ranging from process improvements to shop layout and equipment changes. This role will step into that work, help move it forward, and make sure it gets completed the right way.

You’ll spend time on the floor early on, working alongside the team, then transition into driving projects as you get up to speed

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:

  • Lead process improvement initiatives focused on cycle time, setup reduction, and machine utilization
  • Own AutoCAD works across the site, including drawings, tool documentation, and shop floor layout projects
  • Work together with maintenance, CNC, Braze, post-production, and QA on cross-functional projects
  • Drive projects from kickoff to completion, with full ownership of the timeline and outcomes
  • Build and update SOPs, work instructions, and other process documentation as needed
  • Investigate quality issues, run root cause analysis, and put corrective actions in place
  • Collaborate with engineering peers across the broader Harvey network on shared initiatives
  • Educate and train operators and supervisors on new processes and workflow changes
  • Support continuous improvement work including SMED, cycle time reduction, and uptime initiatives

 YOU'LL BRING:

  • 2+ years of manufacturing engineering experience in a production environment
  • Working AutoCAD proficiency
  • A background in CNC machining or similar manufacturing processes, with a practical understanding of how things run on the floor
  • A self-starter mindset, with examples of taking on work and pushing it through to completion
  • Comfort working both on the floor and at a desk, and knowing when to be in each
  • Clear, direct communication that works for operators, supervisors, and non-technical leaders

NICE TO HAVE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering
  • Experience in cutting tools, grinding, or precision manufacturing
  • Six Sigma, Lean, or DMAIC project experience
  • Plant layout or facilities planning experience
  • SolidWorks proficiency in addition to AutoCAD
  • ERP system experience

WHERE YOU'LL WORK:

You'll be based at our Cuyahoga Falls, OH site, a precision cutting tool manufacturing operation in Northeast Ohio. The environment is clean, the team is experienced, and the work spans CNC grinding, brazing, and post-production. Expect to split your time between the shop floor and your desk, with heavier floor presence early on as you learn the operation.
